    Yes, you will be able to have some limited success without a tripod with either. Range and zoom will play a big role, and I personally would not rely on it. But it could be useful for quick checks when time is limited.

    There is really no way to know for sure.. I can say that based on our almost annual comparisons, that it wasn't until early this year that we really felt like the ATS was improved.

    We'll have to take another look at the 80mm. In the past it did not perform near as well as the Kowa 77mm. Same weight, much better performance, and $900 less.

    Our understanding is that its performance increase is simply due to improved manufacturing processes. But i also suspect that coatings have improved over time as well.
