What are people using in the ways of head lamps for backpack hunting?

I use several, but the petzl tactikkas have been pretty bulletproof so far. I always just pull one battery out of whatever lamp I’m using when it gets put into the pack. Pretty small inconvenience to ensure the thing turns on in the dark later.

What is your ideal Mule Deer Arrow Setup

This. I’m a fairly short draw length with a mid weight arrow, and my 2” mechanical still passed through plus 25’ on my deer this past season.

Perceived noise levels from a radial brake vs a side port?

Put it this way, I remember the shot in particular from my radial braked 300 that seemed to be the onset of tinnitus in my left ear.

    ID Moose worth it?

I saw maybe 6 or 7 different bulls in the main area i elk hunt this year. Maybe 1 would have broken 50”. It is certainly not what it was even 10 years ago.

    Shot Distance for Idaho Panhandle

Like others have said, much of the panhandle is thick! However that’s not to say that long opportunities don’t happen. The particular area I tend to frequent can have me with 10’ of visibility, to shots that can approach 1000 yds. I think the biggest thing is to have a self imposed limit that...

6.5 prc ammo/bullet for whitetail and occasional elk

We’ve had pretty good luck with the CX bullets. 300 yd shots on two deer last week with great blood trails and deer dead within 50 yds. Aiming for lungs.

    European Mount

I started doing them myself. When it was just me and my wife I paid to have them done, but when my daughter and I doubled last year on bucks, I decided to give it a whirl. It’s not bad, and time spent isn’t bad either. Elk are certainly more time consuming, not only due to size but it seems like...

2023 OFFICIAL ELK MEAT POLE THREAD

It went through his chest, behind his front left shoulder and basically rode down the side of his ribs. About 3 or 4 ribs from making it into the gut. I did end up shooting him broadside after the initial shot, but that was a pass through.

2023 OFFICIAL ELK MEAT POLE THREAD

North Idaho bull. Came running in to cow calls on Oct. 27th. Shot him frontal at maybe 25 yds. The bullet is from a factory .308 175 terminal ascent. Not super stoked with it, but I’m sure every bullet at some point won’t look like you want it to.

Incidental predator call ins while elk hunting

Geez, assuming you aren’t far from me across the border judging by the amount of wolves you run into

Incidental predator call ins while elk hunting

Thankfully I haven’t had to deal with grizzlies yet. (YET) I know it’s only a matter of time though

Incidental predator call ins while elk hunting

I was just surprised when I yelled at it that it kept coming.

Does the ice water slush at the bottom of the cooler really matter?

Done several elk in ice chests for multiple days. I just drain once a day or two and make sure no quarters are resting directly against each other or cooler surfaces. Had perfect meat every time so far.

Incidental predator call ins while elk hunting

Just curious how many people accidentally call in big predators (lions, bears etc.) Last week was working a bull maybe 70 yds below me in the thick stuff. Was lucky to hear a twig pop behind me (my hearing is garbage) and 11 yds behind me on the game trail was a lion, full stalk on me. I threw...
