Update - Very little excitement on this hunt. Ran across one hunter that killed a 5x5, and talked with a bunch of others that saw nothing like us. The consistent story all week long was seeing fresh deer tracks and elk tracks that were about a week old. Lack of snow and the fire closure...
I'll add my second one to this thread which just happened this week. I had a late season elk tag in Colorado, while out hunting one day we happened across a mountain lion track. Stopped to take a couple of pictures, thought it was neat as I've only come across that a couple times before. We...
Boots and packs. While scouting on my mountain goat hunt I got caught in a talus field in a pair of Merrells for F's sake. Almost broke both ankles. Got off the mountain, headed straight to Sportsman's Warehouse and bought a pair of Kenetrek Mountain Extremes. Eight years and one re-sole job...
Oh man, now you're putting pressure on me to get one!! I head up Wednesday, child raising obligations are the priority until then. I'll post an update when I get back.
Good advice above. Question for the OP - Does grandpa just want to use his muzzy or does he want to hunt elk during muzzy season?
It can be two separate things. You can choose to hunt muzzy only season which is mid September with elk up high, or you can use a muzzy during 1st rifle season...
Unfortunately that seems to be the norm in unit 20. Can't tell you how many times I've hiked my butt off all morning, go to Estes for lunch, and there are 200 sitting on the golf course....
Thanks, this is an area I've thought about burning points on too. Just got lucky this year and picked it up from the leftover list so it's a great opportunity for an exploratory hunt to see if it's worth the points. I was surprised to see how dry it is up there with all the recent talk about...
Thanks for the info, I was a little worried that might be the case. The area of the closure seems huge, and I'm guessing any pressure south of 34/43 will push all the elk north of there since it will be quiet on that side.
Tag is from Jan 9-20. Latest closure order I see on the Arapahoe/Roosevelt NF page is until Jan 22nd, where did you hear about the 4th? That would be awesome if it opened up.
I have a late season tag for unit 20 and was wondering if anyone has an idea of how hot the fire (Cameron Peak Fire) burned in the northern part of that unit. All of the NF land north of 34 and 43 is closed to all access. I went up there to scout today, couldn't even drive into that area to...
I actually did the 12 days of Christmas just this morning, with some slight modifications since I only have a few kettlebells and a sandbag at home. It's a fun one!
It all comes down to simple math. Low interest rate debts + High interest rate investments = Coming out better in the long run. I'll take a 2.5% mortgage and 7-10% investment return all day long. Refinance and invest the money, just make sure you have enough in the coffers to sustain you for...
That was the answer for me as well. Get them a little big so you can keep a thin glove on underneath them. I have a pair of Serius gloves that are great, warm and you can still shoot with them on. They work down to about 40 degrees, and I put my "choppers" on over them when it's colder. Can...
I have had trouble with specific loads in my slug gun, so maybe try switching to a different slug. For some reason one year when I went to sight in I was all over the place with Hornady's when they had shot fine in the past. Switched to Federal and I was shooting good groups again. Nothing...
I'm in the same boat, cashing in my 7 points next year. I have a couple units in mind that I won't share publicly but you can PM me to discuss if you want. Honestly, I would look at 3rd season. I've found that 2nd season can be tough with the bucks still cruising the timber and not quite in...
