Awesome. Thanks gunnar_17. Clear skies and sunny here on Wednesday and Thursday...but cold! And that's after 3-5" of snow have dumped on Tuesday. Hopefully we can still navigate the slopes alright and spot the billies in that blanket of white.
Best of luck on your October hunts.
Thanks! Yes, that sounds like a good strategy. We'll bring scope and camera...and hopefully get close enough. I'll keep you guys posted how it goes. Fingers crossed for some stretches of clear weather in Oct....in SW Washington, that can be a tall order.
Been looking at a lot of billies prepping for my WA State once-in-a-lifetime tag (season is Oct. 1-Nov. 30). Would really like to harvest an older age class goat (the unit has only been hunted last year with one billy taken after 40+ years of no hunting. Population of 130+ goats, so I'm thinking...
We got back in the unit last Saturday, but fog hampered our scouting efforts. We found this goat, though, and while we didn't get great pics, he seemed to me to have that older donkey face/Roman nose that Sneek-ee mentioned in his post.
What do you guys think? Is this goat an older billy?
And...
Thanks OFFHNTN! Getting back up there on Saturday to try to find him again (and hopefully some plan B or C goats in other parts of the unit). 6 weeks till I can pull the trigger.
Roger that. Thank you! And thanks to Sneek-ee for those photos, too.
That's my only reservations about goat #2 for me - his face just doesn't have that distinctive horse/donkey look to it. Face looks more canine than equine to me (but the photos were also taken from a pretty extreme downward...
Thanks all for your help! The hunt is in WA state.
Interesting comment about the young billies, JP 100. I wondered the same thing while we were looking at them.
Any tips you guys have on making sure I shoot the right goat once the season opens? All three billies are hanging in the same...
Wow, that's interesting. I've been wondering about how much billies will move between now and then. It's a fairly low elevation unit, so I actually don't expect snow between now and Oct (but you never know). That will be something to try to keep tabs on. Thanks.
Man, that's encouraging to hear! So hard for newbies like us to judge. I've seen that particular goat twice on scouting trips. Definitely stood out from the other goats we'd been seeing.
Season opens Oct. 1st. No other tags in the unit. Hopefully he sticks around till then.
A few more pics of goat #2 (I was with hikenhunt on these scouting trips!)
The horns look big on this goat, but my worry is that this could be a younger goat based on face profile (and maybe that's making his horns look bigger?). Would love an experienced goat dude's take on this. Thanks!
