    Baking soda for scent control

I make wipes with a baking soda/ hydrogen peroxide recipe I found online and they seem to work very well for me.

    Get rid of the compound?

I agree with a lot of the posts here in that I too am put off by the insane level of technical intricacies being thrown around by the compound crew online... But be prepared to encounter the same level of geeking out over minor technicalities in the trad world. It’s perhaps even worse because...

Blaze orange vest options cheap vs kuiu/sitka

I’ve got a dirt-cheap mesh vest that weighs next to nothing and fits the bill perfectly for me, but if I were going to replace it, I would get the Orange Aglow version mentioned above. But make sure you verify that mesh blaze is legal in your state. I believe I’ve heard that it’s not everywhere.

    Hanging Food in Bear Country

Side story to this, we met a college kid and his girlfriend at a backcountry site and learned that they didn’t bring any rope for a bag. I offered them some and his girlfriend insisted he take it and hang their food. I went to bed feeling like I’d helped them out a little. When I woke up the...

    Hanging Food in Bear Country

I agree with this. Skurka’s claim that it takes practice is silly. Just do it right. And his argument against it—that most people do it wrong—is also kind of silly. Just do it right. I’ve never backpacked in grizzly country, but spent a lot of time in places with black bears. This summer my...

    Knee Pad Recommendations?

Definitely knee. I’m 6’5” and 220lbs. If these are elbow pads, I don’t want to meet the man that can wear them.

    Knee Pad Recommendations?

Let me know if you have any trouble finding them and I can check to see if my local surplus place still has them. They had a boatload of them last time I was there, but that was months ago.

    Knee Pad Recommendations?

I’ve got a pair of military surplus knee pads that I got for, I think, $6 or $8 at a surplus store. They seem bombproof, but I don’t use them that much because they’re too heavy to pack in but my legs sweat too much to wear them while hiking. Tag says Alta Industries. Photos attached.

Who makes blaze orange merino shirts?

Yeah, for sure. Like I said, it’s a running shirt. I wear it as a base layer mostly all season long, but I always have something over it. The only time it sees light is when it’s still fairly hot and I’m hiking in somewhere or hiking out. In rifle season, ironically, it’s usually too cold to...

Who makes blaze orange merino shirts?

Here’s a photo of the shirt I have. It’s Smartwool PhD brand. The tag says 56% merino and 44% polyester. You should be able to see the perforations on the back panel in the close up photo of the tag area. Additionally, here’s a photo of the shirt next to some of my hunter’s orange. It’s pretty...

Who makes blaze orange merino shirts?

So, I pulled mine out to look at it, and it’s a ringer with the sleeves a burnt orange the way @GunsAreFun described, but the rest of the shirt is a true blaze orange. And I don’t find it to be scratchy at all, but that might be personal preference or different material. Not sure. Like I said...

Who makes blaze orange merino shirts?

I’ve got a Smartwool short sleeve T-shirt in blaze orange and it is a true hunters orange. It’s a merino blend and very lightweight. I love it. But it’s a couple of years old now, so I don’t know if you can still find them. It’s also held up for me a lot better than some full merino tees I have...

    Sleeping Bag Liner Recommendation

Not sure about the silk ones, but the S2S Coolmax one that I have is mostly rectangular, although a slimmer shape than most rectangular bags. However, it’s a very stretchy tshirt material, so I don’t think it will restrict you in the same way as a mummy bag. But depending on what you don’t like...

    Bob Lee Hunter.

Well, if we’re following @Kevin Dill ’s analogy, it means you’re not even sure yet that it’s girls you want to be dating. Haha.

Backpacking packs VS Hunting specific pack

I’ve been in your boat for a while. Always whitetail hunted, spent a bundle on backpacking gear, and when I decided to join my interests, it was hard to stomach spending even more on another pack. You’ve gotten some good advice here, and I’m not sure I have anything more of value to add, but...

    Bob Lee Hunter.

I know I’ll probably get chastised by the trad folks for saying this, but I was warned not to get anything over 35# because I have a 31-32” draw. I’m still brand new to traditional, but I went with a 66”/45# @ 28” and draw weight has not been a factor at all. Went to a local shoot and got some...

    DIY dehydrated meals

I’m curious about your all’s rehydration process. When I dehydrate my own meals, certain things like beans and chicken don’t seem to rehydrate as well. Are you guys soaking in water first? If so, how long? Are you cooking in your pot or pouring boiling water on like a freezer bag meal? Are you...

    Backcountry pocket knife

The Bugout is really nice, but the scales have some give to them. Probably not an issue since you’re also carrying a fixed blade, but if I was going to pick a folder for anything more than food prep and cord cutting in the backcountry, I’d probably choose something with a titanium or steel scale...
