I have been watching several videos as well as my hunt approaches.
I have to say there are quite a few Colorado rifle hunts where the hunters are NOT wearing ANY orange at all. I guess they figure it's a guideline? I have also seen several where the rifle hunter wears a vest and a whatever...
I personally have sold all of my tikkas. They are ok. I am just really unlucky as the 9 I've had over the years only 1 shot moa with any regularity.
I also find it funny that other brands get bashed here so much. It doesn't seem warranted if you read the threads like "what is your elk...
Keep in mind some of the naysayers here also will say that practicing with a .223 trainer is fine and then just shoot your 6mm or 6.5 a little before the hunt. 🤣
I see nothing wrong with honing your skills with lesser recoiling, less expensive ammo. Then using your big boy before season a bit...
In Pagosa Springs for food....Colorado Roadhouse, Riff Raff on the Rio, and Moutain Pizza and Tap Room are all places I've been. All good food - to me.
If you are there for a small lunch or just don't feel like a "restaurant" - the Malt Shoppe is a decent little place right on the river.
Good...
I've used several. I think if you want a lighter weight though you are going to have to spend more. I have both of these.
This one has good tie outs for shelters, durable too. I little heavy, little big to pack - 10x10...
I suggest saving weight. Go with a 0* bag, use the layers you have anyway. I also used to do the nalgene with hot water if it still sucked...but like you say that is only good for about 4 hours. Last year I used hot hands "super warmers". Put one in the foot box, lasts 8 hours at least. Plenty...
I don't qualify for under 8 pounds....I did buy a 300WM this year and rebarreled a 30-06. Trying to keep the WM at 10 pounds or less (just the barreled action is pretty stout). Have to see which one wins the accuracy, dependability tests for this years hunt. It will be one of them though.
Even...
I'll throw out MHO....
Go with your first choice. 8.5 EL's and a "compact" spotter. Those EL's are alpha glass and will get the most use. The 8.5's will not hold you back and will be more useful for your normal and "out west" adventures - especially off a tripod. The spotter will offer more...

Nothing wrong with Savage. Been looking at one in 300 win mag myself...
Oh! AND MDT makes a long action savage chassis already...the oryx, XRS, and LSS-XL Gen2
Black friday on the Oryx was around $280 I think...
I understand completely.
My ruger american predator is easily as fast and smooth as my tikkas. I have no issue with feeding, firing, ejecting. I don't think of them as a budget rifle at all.
Full disclosure I went around back and fired the tikka 6.5 creed to "test" it. It did enough to give...
