A lot of it is depending on area and pressure. Stay flexible, stay mobile, and find rough country that makes you seriously question whether you want to pack an elk out of it...
I shoot 100gr vented Iron Wills. Complete pass throughs on a moose at 75yds and an elk at 80yds. Pronghorn in my avatar was taken at 105yds with the same. Needless to say, I will not be changing broadheads anytime soon...
I bet more people travel to Colorado every year to visit dispensaries than nonresident OTC hunters. I would also bet they pump 20x more money into the economy than nonresident OTC hunters...
Nonresident here... I agree with you. With the rise of wannabe Cameron Haynes and Joe Rogans flooding OTC units, something needs to be done. However, residents should not lose their opportunity to put meat in the freezer.
Let residents keep their OTC tags, but make nonresidents draw.
My other: "Allowing residents to purchase OTC tags, but limit nonresidents to draw only."
Last recommendation: "For hunter safety, do not overlap archery and muzzleloader seasons..."
I exclusively move before light. Last week, I had a solid 5 point I let walk that fed down within 10yds of me in the bottom of a canyon. I was literally standing still in middle of it with zero cover. Was within 25yds for about 20 minutes. It wasn't until sun came up that he busted me.
I apparently only saved the evening hunt track on Onx. Morning would been similar elevations. Started at 8300 to the north then worked my way south and peaking at 9100ish. I should have worked way north back the way I came. However, I was tired/hungry af and took the shorter route off the...
Ditto. It's not that difficult to break 10 miles in a day of chasing elk. Hell, I had a 16+ mile day last year. These are from last year on my Iphone. I keep it in my hip pouch on pack and is usually about 25% less than my GPS and also involve me dropping pack at times for speed.
The elk...
I don't change up my boots (Crispi Idahos). I roll with heavier merino socks and a pair of gaiters. In fact, all of my gear is pretty much the same through hunting season except I roll with heavier wool base layers, a sitka core heavyweight hoody, and a windproof shell.
My Remington 700 300wm loves the 180grain TTSX. Although my one moose was taken with a bow, I can affirmatively state the 180grain can put a mean hurting onto an elk...
Also heard really good reports from friends shooting the 200gr LRX.
