    223 vs 22CM

@Formidilosus I know you said in another thread that you'd move if you had to shoot monos, which was hilarious by the way. But, what would be your minimum combination for elk out to 500 yards with barnes LRX? I'm rebarrelling my 308 Ascent, and was about to have another 18" 6.5cm, but might a...

    Is 308 good enough

I'm with you. I've never shot beyond 400, but if I can prove to myself that I can do 500 consistently, then I might take a perfect shot that far. I will also say this, if an excited hunter can shoot a 300 win mag well, that is extra insurance for a marginal shot. But, my buddy lost an elk...

    Is 308 good enough

You got me, the 308 has about 100 ft/lbs more energy at 500, but about 4 inches more drop, and more wind drift than the 6.5. That's looking at hornady eld-m in both. Even if you dial, that 4 inches plus more drift is going to make you less precise, hence the competition folks going bonkers over...

    7mm-08 vs 308

When you make a bad shot, which will likely happen some day. The 7mm-08 with its flatter trajectory, and better BC (wind deflection+energy) might make the difference between a wounded animal and a dead one. 1" closer to the lungs, liver, or heart has made the difference for me on more than...

    Is 308 good enough

There wasn't much difference in the damage on the elk at 100 yard (150 ttsx .308) versus 400 yards. LRX is supposed to be even better, so i'm switching to that (-and 6.5 creedmoor). More energy beyond 400 yards than .308 AND 20% ish less recoil. Flatter shooting too. So, the 308 is...

So, how light can a Kimber Hunter be? A build thread.

There's a .257 roberts barrel on Ebay for about $100 shipped if anyone is looking. Some bigger calibers also. Not my listings, was searching for a creedmoor...

yeah, I was about to take the saw to it, and I figured why not! That slot I cut out was about 1.5 additional ounces, and more importantly, I have no doubts about the barrel touching the stock anymore, hooray!

For sure! I don't love the look, but I've never found the elk to care about ugly rifles, or missing swivel studs... I'll probably still paint it up pretty for fun.

Now that's what I call free floated! This pic shows the ascent barreled action on the new and improved hunter stock. Still has the steel bolt handle as my ti one is at MPI. I put the mag box on the scale in place of the hunter mag (also at mpi). This stock had zero goo behind the cap, and only...

So, how light can a Kimber Hunter be? A build thread.

Well, I just removed the .43" or "11mm" microcell (that's closer to 10mm) that I ground to fit my contender plastic stock, and it finished at 1.1oz. But, it has only 4mm of padding (6mm plastic), which is fine since that gun is going to be .223. Sadly, the .59" has the wrong screw spacing, so...

Maybe. However, i think that would put me within about 1/2 an ounce of the excellent no glue .59 microcell.

Thanks. Anyone have any ideas on how to make a flip flop work easily on our hollow stocks? The .91" micro cells finish at about 2oz, and the .59" finish about 1.7oz. Both have the plastic backing plate making for an easy install. The plate weighs about an ounce if it's basically the same as...

Wow, what stocks are those? I don't know if the kimber stock would handle treatment like that? Maybe with a couple carbon arrow reinforcements? I like it if it drops ounces!

Any thoughts on making the stock even shorter like this MPI, for a guy that often shoots off of a down tree, my knee, a tripod, or a standing trees horizontal branch? All I know is that too short and I'll risk resting on the barrel which wouldn't work. Holding the stock offhand, it seems like...

Curious what cartridge your hunter is for a recoil perspective on the flip flop pad? I'm going to end up right about 5.5pounds complete with the suppressor in 6.5CM. I know I wouldn't want a flip flop on my non suppressed 5.5 lb Ascent 308, as it's not a lot of fun to shoot. -also, you did a...

Thanks, are you going with the same basic paint job? Was it reasonably nonslip?
