400 and under should be fine if there is no worry about the animal taking a big fall. If so, I prefer being able to anchor it through both shoulders. Maybe I’m following old dogma, but I even follow it on deer.
Their lead time is really fast right now. I had mine 3 weeks from my order date. But beware......if you get it bare bones, there is a good amount of fitting to be done.
You can’t go wrong with any of those. I’m a big fan of the 7mm Rem Mag. 160gr Partition at 3000 fps makes for a versatile load for elk and deer.
In regards to trajectory, the 7mm and 300 given similar BCs will have nearly identical trajectory. The 30-06 won’t be quite as flat. With a 200...
Careful with the 300 Win Mag in a Tikka. It barely fits. If I were doing a 30 magnum in a Tikka, I’d go WSM and use the longer magnum magazine and modify the bolt stop.
I had a Kimber 84M Classic and Montana, both in 308. They were both handy little hunting rifles, but neither was especially accurate. All of my Tikkas have shot exceptionally well and have fed reliably. I can’t argue with the results.

If that’s the case, I wouldn’t run much more than 10x on the high end. Elk are pretty big and their hide makes crosshairs stand out real well! A 30-06, even with 200gr bullets, is still a hold-on-hair proposition on elk at 350 yards (assuming 200 yard zero).
Have you seen the country? What’s it like? I hunt coastal Roosevelt elk and I am generally walking timber where shots can be quick and fairly close. A light rifle that can stay in the hands is more useful than anything. But, if I was going to shoot across open prairie or canyons, I would go...
For the average guy who hunts elks between 0 and 400 yards, most standard cartridges between 6.5 and 33 caliber are fine. Bullet construction is more important than bore size, IMO. Elk are big, so lots of magnification isn’t real important at these ranges. I have an M70 30-06 with a 3.5-10x...
I think of 1911s a lot like Gibson Les Pauls. You pay more, you have to take some time and effort to get it to stay in tune, but once you do, you have a beautiful guitar.....that doesn’t play any better than a Schecter that cost 1/3 the price.
My CZ/DW is a Guardian in 45. Some don’t like the bobtail, but like it in a carry gun. This thing is a beast. The ramped barrel should enhance frame life (alloy).
If it ain’t got a pony....it’s a PHONY!
Haha, just kidding. I am a 1911 fanboy. I’ve got Colts, Springfields, Dan Wessons, and Kimbers. Fit and finish-wise, the Dan Wesson has no rival in my collection. It was $1499, so only marginally more expensive than the other stuff. However, it has...
I’m a fan of the 338 Win Mag. The 210gr TTSX at 2900fps makes for a versatile all-around hunting load and you wouldn’t be undergunned for any NA big game. The 250gr Nosler Partition at 2700 fps is a great load as well. My preference is the TTSX because it shoots flatter out to 400 yards, has...
17 years in myself. Just trying to make it to 25 so I can explore my option. I’ll be 47, so I will find something else to do. Congratulations on your retirement!
