I want to see this post updated with an elk on the ground in November.
You’ve got a tag on the way with a ton of time to study up. Maybe you go and don’t even see an elk, but you’re still going to learn a ton for next time if you apply yourself.
I was positive I would draw my first choice rifle bear unit in CO with 3 points that I didn't really spend much time thinking about alternatives.
Well, I drew 2nd choice. It's a unit I've never been in before, though I've hunted adjacent units to the W and NW of it in the past.
I'm planning a...
I'm doing some re-organizing of the gunroom and have decided to let this one go.
These are pretty rare. The Creedmoor was only made as a special run for Davidson's. Its got an 18" barrel and special pattern on the stock, but everything else is the same as the other Gunsite rifles. I bought it...
Barrel profile has far less to do with accuracy than barrel quality. My Proof, Noveske, Criterion, Hodge, RRA NM, and Rainier barrels all shoot under MOA. My BCMs, Spikes, Aeros, DPMS, CMMGs, and Colt/FNs do not. JP, Odinworks, and a few others are close to MOA, but picky for one reason or...
Just grab one of the BCM blemished uppers they sell and be done with it.
I’ve worked with about 3 dozen uppers from every brand imaginable and never found any that has the problems referenced above. I’ve only run into one that had any misalignment of the barrel flange with the receiver (an el...
JP Bolt and good brass. No issues here. At hunting round counts, it will never be an issue.
Besides, isn’t all the factory available loaded at AR pressures anyways?
Barrel and bolt
Optic
Trigger
Nothing else really matters that much on an AR, but ergonomics are important.
Plan out the entire build before you get started buying anything. It’s so easy to get tangled up in a convoluted build of mismatched parts if you don’t really plan it out.
Personally I'd run a 7x57 or 6.5x55, only because I like the smooth old rifles you usually find them chambered in, but you'd never see a ballistic difference in any of them at these ranges..
Food for thought…
Running muzzle velocities based on published online data from Nosler, with a 10mph crosswind and 200yd zero, there isn't more than 0.1mil of difference at 400yds in drop or wind drift between a 270 130gr Accubond, a 270 150gr Accubond LR, a 280AI 150gr Accubond, and a 280AI...
You don’t need anything fancy for 400yds. I’ve taken a couple of critters beyond 300yds with an old Husqvarna .270 and 130gr softpoint ammo from the 1970s. Heck, even 270 is probably overkill for that range.
I’d look at a 6mm Creedmoor at the ranges you’re considering. 6.5CM if you can’t make...
I’d be interested in the side by side photos.
I’ve only seen the 109 ELDMs at GA Precision. Are they something made specially for them, or a new product from Hornady that’s coming online?
Yeah, I much prefer the mil Amplus reticles that I got early on vs the MOA that I got in 3-18 on my 6mm ARC. Too bad, it doesn’t look like they’re doing the mil scopes anymore.
Nothing other than amateurism and a lack of time. And probably the lack of desire to have results criticized by one faction or another who happens to be unhappy with the results. From my limited observations, it seems only @Formidilosus tests are really taken at face value.
I do have a spare...
What’s wrong with the Amplus?
I’ve been waiting to see somebody drop test one before making up my mind, but I’ve been really pleased with mine in the short term. I’ve only got about 60 rds down the tube with it over a couple years, but I took one heck of a tumble packing out an elk with mine...
