I've one turkey with a rifle. Used a .243 and shot it through the wing broadside if that makes sense. Zero damage to the breast or legs and worked very well.
Sounds like the headspace is too short on spec. Could have a smith run a reamer in it to get to spec pretty quick and cheap I would think. Way cheaper than a new rifle.
Not the best pics, but you can kinda see. Firearms Machining Services in Kalispell, MT did the work. He cut it down, threaded, and made the thread protector. I bought the adapter from Down Range Products.
Hollowpoint. I used a 10mm on my lion a couple years ago. Still had my hard cast bear loads in it from earlier in the year. Put one right in its chest and it jumped out and ran away. Put the dogs back on it and it still had a lot of life left. A 10mm hole through both lungs was the only damage...
The reticle sucks on that model. Put a simple mil dot style, or the one that’s in the 2.5-15 credo, and I would have already bought one. It’s another angle to come at it though. Probably easier to add a different reticle than to change everything else.
This with an exposed turret and ffp on the mil/mil version would be a winner for me. Seems like it would be a good potential replacement for the SWFA 3-9 since backorders are going on a over a year.

Originally from West Virginia. Moved to MT about 6 years ago when I was 27. I was spending all my vacation time each year to drive across the country for one hunt so decided it would be better to live closer. Love it so far and no plans of going back. There are certain things that I miss about...
I would make sure it’s getting enough water. Sycamore is naturally found close to water in its range. Think along rivers. That’s where I would start.
