I have been using a Garmin Alpha 200i to lay training blood tracks for my Drahthaar. The track is 400 meters and 8 oz of blood. I came to realize the distances were not what the GPS was saying. I started carrying a TT15 collar, my Alpha 100, my iPhone with onx and my reliable Army landnav pace...
As a retired paratrooper I found that wearing Army issue jungle/desert boots and Goretex socks worked very well. I spent 2 weeks out in the field at Ft Polk and never had wet feet.
I have a pair of Colorados, I'm unimpressed with them. Very hot and stuffy for an uninsulated boot, the lining is slick and socks slip. And the absolute worst is that they leaked the first time I wore them in dew soaked grass (I was wearing gators).
I spent $300 on a fancy battery for my CPAP. I tried it out in the house and it lasted 1 hour. What a waste of money. I can do an over night trip but by the second night of no CPAP I'm getting a bad headaches.
It sucks being reliant on a CPAP.
I will say that my DDs did not do real well in the heat. Sometimes hunting I carry 1 1/2 gallons of water just for the dogs. I try to plan activities around water when it's hot out.
I have had Deutsch Drahthaars (German bred and registered Wirehairs) for about 20 years or so. I think they are one of the best of the versatile dogs out there. The German testing system helps ensure the versatility of the dogs. Mine are great retrievers, retrieving everything from swans...
Wow, that would be rough on the dogs feet. Makes the unvented look like the proper choice. Where I was hunting we did not have much bare ground so the vented worked ok.
Go with the Lewis boots. Eastern Colorado has some nasty stickers, I had to carry one of my dogs 1/4 of a mile after we ended up in a massive sticker field and she had sandburs packed in her feet. I used the Lewis boots and could not be happier. There is an art to putting them on and keeping...
until over grazing of public lands is addressed the elk issue on private land will never change. I want to puke every time I step on public land grazed down shorter than a putting green on a golf course.
All good advice here. My experience since retiring and moving to Montana, Drahthaar pointed then killed a mountain lion cub on our very first walk on a forest service road (where's the momma?); several black bear encounters, with a nice point on one and a surprised me when I flushed it; too many...
I'll also add they are heat sensitive. In the summer I plan walks around early mornings and water sources since they get hot fast. As a previous poster said they can be manipulative, my first could and would work anyone to get what she wanted. She needed someone in charge and if she felt there...
I'm a Drahthaar guy, I've had one since 2004 and currently have 2, an 8 year old and a 13 month old pup. I believe in the VDD testing and breeding program which results in great dogs. My Drafts live in the house and I think Drafts do better in the house with the family. I got the pup because...
my only experience with the Gunner kennel left me unimpressed. My daughter bought one and the door would not stay latched. For the cost you'd think there was better quality control and better customer service. The people at Gunner said "that happens, send it back" (at my daughter's expense). My...
