    Hearing protection for kids

I’ve been using a pair of Soundgear electronic ear plugs for a few years for waterfowl hunting and have been pretty happy with them. Much easier to tolerate for long periods of time as compared to muffs. https://soundgear.com/collections/instant-fit

    Alaska Sheep Harvest 2023

It was another very depressing year wandering around in sheep country. I found myself constantly shaking my head in disbelief knowing how many animals used to live in areas now inhabited by few, or in some cases, no sheep. I will be very curious to see two more pieces of data out of these...

    OnX hypocrisy

So before this guy leased the private for access to the public, there was no public access. Right? Now, a small percentage of the paying public, through his guide service, will have access to the public. So, in fact, didn't he increase access to public land? I do think that the whole...

    OnX hypocrisy

I'm renaming all of my OnX waypoints to "sh*tty hunting spot, never go back."

    Dall Sheep Shape

A friend with 40+ years of sheep hunting in AK did a 18 day hunt in the Yukon this year and logged around 180 miles. He said something pretty similar re: covering lots of distance between drainages and bands of rams. Less elevation gain and loss than compared to average terrain in AK, but lots...

    Dall Sheep Shape

I would say an average day of Dall sheep hunting, for me at least, is usually 8 miles and 3500 feet of elevation gain and then loss. On any given hunt there will be days that will double those numbers and half of those numbers based on where you are at and what you are doing. Sometimes the...

    Your favorite hunting knife?

Another vote for the Victorinox paring knife. Best $7 a guy will ever spend on hunting gear. Small, light, durable, easy to sharpen, etc. etc. Perfection in my opinion.

    Fire VS Ammo

Definitely not anything close to full force/velocity. Because there is no barrel to contain the pressure generated and propel the bullet, the lead is still unlikely go anywhere with enough force to do much damage. The brass blows apart in this unlikely scenario as well, further lessening the...

Best tent for Alaska sheep hunt

Took the Enan for a little stroll this weekend to wind down my sheep season. No rams were harmed in the making of this backpacking trip...

    AK Sheep, Population Observations

I wish it was just a local problem. With the exception of a few smaller pockets of sheep that seem to be doing OK, the trend across the state is most populations are down 40-70% over historic averages. Several areas that have historically supported small populations of sheep are without any...

    AK Sheep, Population Observations

With the 2023 AK sheep season winding down, I am curious to hear from some folks who have spent time in the hills this year and what they saw for sheep numbers, historic comparisons that can be offered, lamb recruitment observations, etc. I spent a week in GMU 13 for the opening week in a place...

Is one full day at 10,000 feet enough to acclimate for a flatlander?

Start taking 1/2 dose (125mg) a day or two before you plan to sleep at a higher elevation. Continue for a day or two after you've moved to your highest altitude or as you continue to move higher. Most should be able to lay off it a day or two after sleeping well at their highest altitude...

    Solar panels, do they work?

For backpacking mtn missions I use a Goal Zero 5w panel and Goal Zero Flip 12 battery pack. I only need to keep my phone and InReach topped off and this setup is more than adequate for that and as light a combo as I was able to put together. During the day the panel charges the battery pack...

Identity of old sheep rifle brass

I've happened across a couple of pieces of old brass on sheep trails in the last handful of years. In each case I've thought it was pretty cool following in the footsteps of another hunter who found success in the same area. The one we picked up this year was a 300 Dakota, which I hadn't heard...

    Cliffed Out...Sheep Hunters Rescued

Yes of course terrain looks a lot different depending on distance, perspective, etc. From their perspective it obviously looked to them like they could drop off of the ridge to end run the steep step. When you are on top of a steep ridge it is hard if not impossible to tell what the terrain...

    Cliffed Out...Sheep Hunters Rescued

I watched this whole event unfold from the beginning. I'd spotted these guys coming up the ridge they were rescued from about 2 hours earlier. We were sitting around camp and I saw the C130 start to circle the area and knew immediately these guys had pushed the button. Sure enough, shortly...

    Vomiting at altitude

It also makes carbonated beverages taste like crap. Diuresis is quite common as well. Other than the tingles as you noted, no real side affects for most. The std dosage is one 250mg tablet a day, which is a lot. At low to moderate elevation, half, or even a quarter 250mg tab has been shown to...

    Vomiting at altitude

If you get altitude illness, go down AS QUICKLY as possible. Going down quickly doesn't make you more sick, quite the opposite. HACE has nothing to do with spinal fluid and pressure, only lack of adequate O2 perfusion in the brain.

    Stikine Packrafts

Here is a breakdown of materials used in each: https://www.alpackaraft.com/materials https://www.stikinepackrafts.com/pages/materials Lots of similarities in materials and design. Looks to me like Stikine did a pretty good job of knocking off the Alpacka designs. Given the similarities in...
