Looking for info or guides for fishing the Kenai in Alaska

I'd highly recommend Mark Wackler and his company Alaska Fishology. https://akfishology.com/ https://orcalodge.com/ Mark owns and runs the Orca Lodge in Soldotna as well, which is a world-class setup, and they offer trips for trout and all available salmon species on the Kenai (motor) and...

Looking for info or guides for fishing the Kenai in Alaska

When are you guys going to be in AK and what are you interested in with regard to fishing species, style of fishing, river, ocean, drift boat, power boat, bank fishing, flyout, some combination thereof, etc. Do you want an all-inclusive lodge type deal or just fishing? Many options to...

    NWT average elevation?

I use 4500' for AK. They live at a pretty similar elevation band across their ranges. I've seen them from sea level to 7500' but most are in the 4-6k zone. It's Canada though, so you have to divide by .6

    My 2024 Dall Pack LIst

No, I am just soft and weak and hate humping heavy packs over mountains :) For me, the difference between 50lbs and 60lbs is the difference between being able to go all day up and down the hill at a relatively good pace, and getting smoked and having to quit early. Carrying half a sheep and...

    My 2024 Dall Pack LIst

In my experience my pack winds up pretty well soaked if the weather is bad enough to need a pack cover, which is why I've gone to just trying to keep the critical stuff dry inside the pack. Yes a pack cover will buy you some additional time before full soakage occurs, but the wetout is...

    My 2024 Dall Pack LIst

As others have noted, much of what you need will be based on what is provided by the guide, shared items, etc. My priorities on sheep trips usually revolve around cutting as much weight as possible, sacrificing some comfort in the process. This may not be as high of a priority for you given...

    AK Sheep, Population Observations

You've touched on one of the great conundrums in sheep management here in AK. There is no perfect, or even close to ideal metric for gauging the state of any given sheep population or population as a whole. No one data set, or even group of data really paints the complete picture. 19C has...

    AK Sheep, Population Observations

I spent a lot of time in 19C from 2010 through 2016. I was absent for a handful of years and returned in 2021 and was shocked at the lack of sheep. Based on the week we spent stomping around in the area, I estimated the population was about 35-40% of what what I had come to understand as...

    New sheep hunter

Congrats and condolences if you happen to catch the sheep bug bad. Your wallet, feet, and back are going to suffer, but your soul will thrive. Now get a heavy pack on and start gaining some elevation.

Packing meat in trail running shoes?

This. I’ve packed a fair amount of meat in Speedgoats and Speedcross trail shoes. Personally I don’t hump more than 45-50lbs in trails shoes. More than that and I really want some ankle support.

Hornady Interlock .308 Breaking Apart in Mid-air

Completely normal function and cycle of operation.

Hornady Interlock .308 Breaking Apart in Mid-air

Yes. Multiple fragmented pieces of the bullet hitting the cardboard backer. The first question I asked him was whether he was sure he was shooting the right caliber of ammo.

Hornady Interlock .308 Breaking Apart in Mid-air

I asked that question as well. Told him to inspect the bore and chamber for any sign of damage, anomalies, etc. Assuming there is none, my guess is a bad batch of ammo that wound up with ultrathin jackets somehow.

Hornady Interlock .308 Breaking Apart in Mid-air

No can. Not sure on the make/model of the rifle. Will find out. Has used it extensively with a range of ammo, including another lot number of this ammo.

Hornady Interlock .308 Breaking Apart in Mid-air

I just got a call from a buddy who has been hunting down in Texas for a week. He has shot and lost a number of hogs and this morning shot and couldn’t track a whitetail doe. All shots were sub-60 yards from a very competent marksman. Low likelihood of a clean miss. Being super frustrated he...

    Hunting - Powder Recommendation

I don't recall what the sources were. One online source and a friends reloading manual. As others have pointed out, pressure is the issue, not necessarily the powder charge going into the round and yes I understand that the latter drives the former. But, there are many other specific factors...

    Hunting - Powder Recommendation

This is what I did. Worked up in .5 grain increments from below Hornady's max to what I settled on when I hit my desired MV. Zero signs of pressure problems. Bolt lift and spent primers are identical to the factory rounds I was trying to match.

CCI 250 Primers vs Fed 215 Primers

I've used the 250s and Remington 9 1/2 in my .300wm with no noticeable difference between the 2.

    Hunting - Powder Recommendation

Trying to achieve a very specific MV. I've cross checked with a few other sources of load data and much more experienced reloaders and Hornady seems to be pretty conservative with their max.
