I found when archery elk hunting not having their packs on while I was hunting was the best way to go. They sometimes shake to adjust their pack a little and that noise spooked elk. Besides that they sound exactly like elk in the woods. Mine even would rake trees up. It's also different getting...
That early I would get as high up in elevation as you can. Deer will still be in velvet and likely not in the thick brush as much. At least that's where I would start.
I would start as high as possible and work your way down until you start seeing deer for that month/time of year. Every unit/area is different but in my experience that is a good rule of thumb.
Learn to trim hooves. They need this done every couple months or so depending on your weather/environment in Oregon. I use an angle grinder with a 60g flap disc. works great.
This is something you don't have to do but it will help. Learn to sew. Making your own gear is a life saver, money...
We finally got out on our first overnight trip of the summer. Lesson learned is heat, even though we started in the morning. We didn’t gain a ton of elevation but on the second half of the trek in it was pretty warm and you could tell it effected the goats. Something to keep in mind. Otherwise...
Where else would you recommend I go? It’s 60 miles or farther in any direction to get into decent hunting for deer. I have killed deer in the northern cascades. I don’t know what you want from me.
Welcome! I live on the eastside of Washington. You may not know this since you are new, hunting in Washington is under attack. I highly suggest you get involved. check out the Sportsman's Alliance for more details.
We Killed 2 mulies on public land last year. First one was opening day of the general season. Second on was a quality tag, but not a tag known for giants or high success. You can do it, pick an area and learn it. It will take some years to find where the bucks hide and how they deal with pressure.
Are you wanting to keep them and just want some people to come take them out for a week/weekends? I live in Benton city and have pack goats. I've been considering transitioning into llamas in a few years. I would definitely take you up on taking them out for a long weekend if that is what you...
The best way I have found to get goats to cross a creek is to take your best and easiest going goat. "Drag" him across. The other goats will realize they need to cross and will quickly follow. This is similar to your method but I found it takes them less time to decide they will cross if they...
I wanted a small pack to take when I’m just going on day hikes, training or when I’m fishing, scouting. I have seen Kifaru and Marsupial make versions of this. This is my version:
It’s made from 500d cordura and water resistant zippers. I’m making another for a buddy right now and I plan on...
That is pretty correct for a good llama, sometimes even more.
