I will concede random draw works well for some instances. But that doesnt mean preference points should never be used. Its obvious preference points will not solve problems of draws that have low tag numbers and high numbers of applicants. ie - if you have 18 tags and 619 applicants under a pp...
Either system is crap. Demand exceeds supply. If you want a "better system" you have to change demand or supply.
The math is simple, a 5% random draw odd means you are more likely to never draw in 55 years than draw any one year.
A Honda Fourtrax 300 (a Foreman 450 if you want a bigger machine) will not be beat for dependability. The suspension sucks and they're slow. But they are the textbook definition of bulletproof out of the box.
The gov't accountability office, GAO, studied unauthorized grazing on BLM and USFS land in 2016. They found the frequency and extent of unauthorized grazing is unknown bc agency officials resolve issues informally, ie, over the phone, and do not record them.
They also found the agencies rarely...
Correlation vs causation.
No doubt mule deer avoid elk. However, the rise of elk populations and the subsequent decrease of mule deer is largely due to grazing habits that have and are decreasing shrub density in favor of grasslands. This leads to elk habitat over deer. Elk populations rise and...
Picky eaters are expensive. Nutritious food is typically more expensive than processed foods, ie hot dogs vs chicken.
I grew up in a family of 10. Stick with potatoes, rice, and pasta. Chose pork over red meat. Incorporate more hot cereals for breakfast. Grill hot dogs over chicken. In order to...
I get that. Grazing has an accumulating effect. Grazing encourages grasslands to grow where the forbs and bushes used to grow. Over years and years and decades we see the loss of habitat and further degradation of mule deer habitat, thus lowering the carrying capacity of mule deer.
Yeah, I agree wholeheartedly. The units are at carrying capacity for deer. But that capacity is diminished by the grazing that happens on every inch of national forest.

I agree with everything you said here.
1. I think the timing of this comes from the new Director. What's worse, having 0 collars or chasing them to get an idea of how bad it is?
2. I hear ya and I agree, but those tags will sell out regardless of the date, right?
4. Idaho should absolutely have...
The biggest difference between this winter and winter of 2016-17 is the population of mulies we had. This year we went into winter with the population we came out of 2017 with. You think the winter of 17 was bad and deer were scarce. Well now it'll be as if we had two bad winters right in a row.
Born and raised in SE Idaho. I quit hunting mule deer in SE Idaho because of the piss poor management.
In my book the absolute number 1 problem with mule deer is lack of quality habitat/access to the quality habitat. Grazing and mule deer don't mix. Dozens of biologists and research papers have...
I understand Elon's concern to take a 6 month moratorium in order to create safety guidelines before further development of AI, but I doubt his concerns are so pure, but rather motivated by money, and his need for a time-out in order for him to catch up.
Artificial intelligence is the way of...
I'm with you. I would like to see them tracked individually then aggregated. However, this is near impossible when they do sight surveys over wintering range. That's why I think we only really see the aggregated population estimates.
Black-tail deer are a subspecies of mule deer. I would bet they include black-tails and hybrids under their estimates of mule deer.
Rechecked the survey estimate and it explicitly states they do include black-tail deer in the mule deer population estimate.
Not confrontational to ask reasonable questions. The members of the Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (WAFWA) provided the data to the Mule Deer Working Group. You can find their work on wafwa.org.
