Dan we can agree to disagree.
We have made several tester shelters, and it was the preference of not one person who tested them.
The strength part on a larger shelter is real , especially if you are out for a few days and beyond walking out.
In essence, the argument for seems to be, that...
I've had a custom GWS bag before (Non WM) .. and several WM bags (Micro Fiber). MF, is a very good balance of water resistance and breathability IMO, and GWS is overkill IMO , but very good just overkill. If I am packing it on my back often , MF, or even ExtremLite .. if I was only doing Fly in...
Sitka Kelvin Active and Rab .. I used the Sitka for a few years, up until late season .. really a base layer, that, and puffy vest, and wind / water layer was my layering system for temps from about 20 -60 .. Just got the Rab a bit ago , haven't used it on long term trips , done a couple hikes...
We build packs in Western Colorado. We make the frames in Tennessee , and Anodize them in Colorado. Our SpectraGrid is from Taiwan . Our hardware , is mostly from Asia
Hi
Kevin from SO here .. sort of the horses mouth I guess.
A liner, and really good lightweight high tenacity nylon is simply lighter than any single item that is breathable , and a lot lighter than the lightest canvasses. It costs a bit more labor, but in reality it is the lightest most...
Dave and Amy Freeman spent a winter in the BWCA in one. They changed ot a larger stove for convenience . They were in the negative temps a lot. I've been in Negative 20. Yes need to keep the stove fed.
The Kodiak is a sweet bag, essentially the same as the Badger but with more down. For me, and I do a lot of different activities, general backpacking, car camping, backpack hunting, bike packing, pack rafting ... I get more use out of the Badger. 15 Degrees, is good enough, and I can suffer or...
Western Mountaineering Badger is the best bag out there for all season use and lots of use. Basically waterproof, super breathable, big and real 15 F rating
You can actually tie a cordage knot below the line lots and pull that and use it to open the shelter. Also, likely you put a tiny loop on a stick or piece of carbon and do the same
Yes zippered packs have an internal load shelf.
Also , to the comment of looks really sharp and pics don't do Justice .. I agree as do most of us that have seen / handled
I used a quilt last night, I have used them on and off for 10 -15 years, and slept in below 0 with a quilt, or with some sort of quilt combo. I also have used a lot of different sleeping bags and mummy bags.
I think a draft collar is worthwhile for a quilt or mummy bag , keeps the temp more...
Wow awesome trip. I did a similar but shorter trip half way across the San Juans a few years ago. We used similar tactics taking turn breaking trail etc.
I wouldn't hesitate to haul out say backstops etc, or smaller quarters . For large loads , weight up helps, but you could cinch off bottom compression etc to help keep it up. Some load shelf packs dont have a facility to keep it up a bit higher. However, I'd say 50 -60 lbs would be most I'd...
