I bought the black ovis ones last year on sale for like $100 bucks. Not sure how they stand up to the others but I would recommend them, especially for the price.
Personally I haven't found a place for a soft shell. Mid to late season I wear a 200ish weight merino long sleeve half zip, a puffy, and a shell. Those 3 layers cover almost every scenario with the exception of super cold weather I will bring an additional fleece type mid layer.
I'll throw in a data point for Drolet stoves. Wife and I put one in our house last year and have been very pleased with it. One night last winter got down to -42F and it was 86F inside when I got up in the morning. 2000 sq ft house and burn just about 4 cords of lodgepole.
Learned that the hard way before. Ended up with a half alive elk and no more ammo. I was about 14 at the time, I’ll let your imagination determine the outcome of that event. Needless to say I’m glad there was nobody around to watch.
