Also: a real adventurous person could probably load the 69 TMK to push 2200 fps; not sure you'd have the twist to stabilize it at that lower velocity though (the gun is 1/9, I think)...
Well, I have some progress. I picked up the Dark Mountain Arms Stowaway in 5.7. It's a really neat design, but the trigger is an adventure. So I've been hacking on my mechanicals, of course, and I have it to where it's serviceable - kind of a redneck 2-stage feel.
Anyway, mine will chamber 60...
Just know that there are state wildlife agency employees actively cataloging info from this thread and elsewhere in order to persuade ruling committees to drop the minimum caliber laws and allow 22s for deer. By my count, 38 states already allow it.
I'm one of them who is working on that - so...
You're exactly right; however, I've shot deer with this approach (45 Colt cast SWC's at 800 fps), and while the bullets always exit, and the deer do die with double lung hits, blood trails are long and very sparse to nonexistent. In thick cover, it makes for tough recoveries.
That's the thing; what I'm attempting is to create a load that won't be "risking it," but will be totally sufficient - just as we've seen that the 223/77 is fully sufficient for elk/moose/etc.
Got the supplies on the way to try this out on some deer in the fall. The rifle will actually be a single shot ultralight bolt action in 5.7x28, not 22 Hornet, made by Dark Mountain Arms. Using Lil-Gun, GRT says I should be able to get a 60 TMK to ~22-2300 fps MV. My goal is to make the best...
True. I hope to examine the effects of a 60 gr TMK at 22 Hornet speeds (~1800 impact velocity) on some deer this fall. Will report back, but I anticipate it should be a nice, ethical minimum for deer-sized game, given that the 77 TMK is more than enough.
I keep asking myself why I keep up with these threads. Then I think of a funny joke at the expense of one of the Boomers, then I talk myself out of making it.
And still, I keep coming back.
Also, I only window mine enough to hold 3-4 long rounds. Probably helps the mag hold together and I don't need any more in there anyway.
2700 would be great. I haven't gotten the barrel back from getting profiled, but I gave the smith some very skinny dimensions (0.600 tapered to 0.450 at the...
Cut a few grooves in my NFA lower to allow 2.400" OAL with my windowed mags. Hello, 88 ELDM! Could maybe get a little more OAL but the NFA is getting thin on material up there. I think 2.45" would punch through the lower. How does the TN Arms compare?
The upper and barrel extension will take a...
OK, yall got me on board with the smaller match bullets; gonna shoot them this fall. The evidence is just too overwhelming, and I'm confident they'll work for me just like they have for all of you. I'm even working on a 223/77 2200 fps load for my younger kids to hunt with - should be the...
Working on a project to ease extraction and chambering. I got an aluminum bolt knob from Ebay and slapped it on - its huge, so I might shorten it, but I also really want a 6 ARC and wonder if this might make it doable. Definitely increases the odds of knocking it out of battery, but we'll see...
