    Route 70 vs 80

We normally take 70 across. The last time we went to Kansas City and went north and picked up 80 hoping to see some different scenery. It wasn't much different. I prefer to go out one way and come back another.

    Career choice advice

Find something you really like and become an expert. Gain experience and then start your own company. Find your niche hopefully in a field that is in high demand. Build your company and make good money then sell it while you are still relatively young and buy your ranch.

    Elk water use questions

I rarely see a large group of cows come to water without at least a mid-sized bull around the first of Sept. I would be willing to bet that a bull will join them any time now. It is entirely possible that a good bull will show up IMO.

First week of September too early?

Not sure what you are trying to get at here. Was simply trying to answer the question to the OP. I guess you didn't like my answer...

    Non-big game bucket list hunts

Mine is a midwest duck hunt. I'm going to knock this off the list around New Year's with a trip to Kansas with my son and a couple of buddies.

First week of September too early?

I hunt the opening week of archery every year and we hear bugling every day. Some days we hear more than other days. Some years we hear more than other years. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to the bugling. Some mornings we wake up and it is unusually cold and clear with no wind and...

To Drive or Fly? Fuel Costs Predictions for October

I prefer to drive but have done both. We are flying this year. I flew last year and killed an elk. Had it processed at a local processor and shipped back home to Virginia from CO with a specialty meat courier who transports wild game for hunters. It cost $6 per lb to ship plus about $400 for the...

Early/Mid Season Pant with Hip Zips

I love both the Tiburons and Attacks. I often wear the Attacks in the cool mornings during early archery elk season and change into the Tiburons in the afternoon when it gets warmer. Both are extremely comfortable and the zips work great.

What time of day are most of your shots on Elk?

We hunt early archery season and have killed 70% of our bulls in the evenings. Best time has been about an hour before dark.

What's Your Favorite Tactic for Hunt Early Archery Elk?

One word....water. Especially if you are hunting an area with limited water sources in the area.

    Deep Sea Fishing Trip

I would add to any US list the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Fishing out of Oregon Inlet, NC is world class fishing and the gulf stream is relatively close with the average being only about 35 miles off the beach. Most of the charters take 6 people. Species targeted are tuna, dolphin, wahoo and...

Are we headed for another 2008?

Coming from a family of farmers, I am always sympathetic. None of my family or friends farm huge tracts of land and most work several hundred acres up to 2000. I am sure there are plenty out there who have done very well for themselves and that is great news. But the average farmer that I know...

Are we headed for another 2008?

I feel for my farming buddies. Fertilizer, seed and roundup costs have doubled and tripled. Diesel prices higher now than any time in history. Hard to get tractor repair parts and on and on. They are going to need $10 corn and $20 soybeans to make any money. It sucks all the way around for...

Are we headed for another 2008?

Not in shambles currently but steaming straight for a cliff IMO. In my business, our suppliers typically have an annual price increase that is 2-4%. For a year now we have experienced price increases between 5-8% each quarter. We are receiving new price increase notifications daily. The...

Are we headed for another 2008?

With the economy in shambles, are we headed for another 2008? Everyone I have talked to for the last year has had similar experiences all over the country. They put their house on the market and within a day or two they have multiple offers all of which are thousands more than their asking...

    Archery elk pants

Kuiu Tiburon pants are awesome for warm weather. They are the lightest weight, coolest and most comfortable pants for hunting in warm weather that I have ever worn. Air goes through the pants and it almost feels like wearing shorts. When hiking in to an area, unzip the vents and more air comes...

    Owning Land vs. Hunting Trips

I could almost have written this same post word for word and I am also in SE Va. After going out west chasing elk, the deer hunting around home just doesn't do too much for me. We do enjoy fishing at our farm and the turkey hunting is pretty good. I have learned recently to love duck hunting so...

Should I wait to buy a house?

I am no expert but the market is crazy now. I have talked to many people recently who have told me that sellers are receiving multiple offers within a few days of listing all of which are full price plus several thousand more dollars added on top. This is unsustainable and will not last much...

Money advice for a 19 year old

The absolutely best way to make serious money in life is to find a niche. Become an expert in something where there is not an insane amount of competition whether it is some type of service or selling a product. The best niche would be something where you do not have to compete with big box...

    Kuiu Kenai jacket vs?

I have the Kenai and love it. It is warm and extremely comfortable. I like mine so much that I will most likely buy another one in a solid color and use it as my every day jacket. I like it better than my puffy jacket and it seems just as warm to me.
