I’m in a similar boat to you, planning to get a mountain curr simply because a family member is about to have a litter this year. Hunted his dogs this week after being out of the squirrel game for a while. Had a blast, dogs never hunted further than 250 yards or so from us. Very friendly dogs...
The big thing about mechanicals from what I’ve seen personally is weight/speed. I started out shooting 387 grain arrows at 317 fps with mechanicals and even on white tails, penetration was poor. At your arrow weight and speed you should have enough energy to be very effective. With mechanicals...
Yeah that's the way I understand it. Supposedly subsonics with gas checks leave minimal to no fouling. I assume that the exposed tip on cup and cores aren't an issue due to the minimal surface area and whatnot but maybe someone with more knowledge can chime in here. Cast lead is definitely out...
It's not a good idea to shoot exposed lead through any sealed can due to the fouling. I believe the R2 is a sealed can so the same goes for it. Most rifle ammo these days is jacketed anyway so its a non-issue for the most part.
If these end up being made to fit a Browning I'm in. I already decided on a Browning X-Bolt as the next rifle purchase and I think this would be a perfect stock to throw on it. Just started listening to the Rokstock podcast, y'all keep up the great work. Super exciting stuff.
Ask my wife if I should spend however much money on whatever piece of hunting gear I’m wanting to buy. The answer is almost always no which saves me a bunch of money.
Couple of small tools and a pair of shoes. Two or three small hunting items. Receiving gifts is becoming less of a priority for myself every year. The overzealous gift giving wears me down anymore. One side of my family plays dirty santa every year now (approximately $25 gift value is the budget...
Personally, I like an inertia gun for waterfowl. Very simple, easy to work on. I shoot a Stoeger M3000 which is a Benelli copycat at a fraction of the price. After several years of abuse I've only had one part fail and it was a $5 spring that took a few minutes to replace. The Beretta A400...
Lots of variables in choosing a new duck gun.
The fact of the matter is that you will not be hindered by your choice between 12 and 20. Both will be effective in the field as good as loads are these days. Especially with dialing in choke/shell combos, you can get really good groups out of...
Get on the rifle scope field evaluations forum and start doing some research. I ended up with a SWFA 3-15 after going down the rabbit hole. Lots of good info on there.
That's very true, and although I hate to admit it, the accuracy guarantees make the average consumer (me) feel like they have a bit of added insurance if you pick up a lemon off the shelf.
Echoing others thoughts here but it sounds like your choices are really either to work on habitat management/attracting deer or to find a new place to hunt. Its not optimal but if the man took 3 years to pile up a stick wall I would guess that there's no coming around on that one anytime soon...
