Coming down a mountain one afternoon after an early elk hunt I found this billy sound asleep against a tree. I walked up to within 10' of him, whereupon he slowly, and in a completely untstartled way, got up. He did a big stretch with legs out in front like a golden retriever, and decided to...
Model 70's and open sights are like peas and carrots. Years ago I did a M70 Fwt 30-06 cut to 21" with an NECG rear, and XS Sights front w/ blade. Bansner stock. What I call a Wilderness Wandering Rifle. My next will be similar, but in 308 and different rings.
I like the Tikka suggestions.
How I'd roll:
Kimber Montana in 6.5CM, 7-08, 308, 270, 30-06, 280ai
Cut and thread barrel to 18"
Suppressor of choice (something lightish and shortish)
Talley 30mm Lwts
Nightforce NXS 2.5-10x42
Butler Creek Mountain Sing
All that will equal a sub 7.5 all-up...
I started life as a carbine fan, including one 30-06 with an 18.5" bbl. I gravitated away from them in the late 90's. Muzzle blast is a thing. My hearing is a thing. The only way I'd go back to a barrel less than 22" is with a suppressor, in which case 18" would be ideal.
Luke Frazier is probably my favorite contemporary wildlife artist. A client has a pile of his originals, and I've had the pleasure of getting to view them closely.
An artist friend who passed away 5 years ago left me a bronze he'd done. It captures the moment he arrowed a beautiful buck with his recurve as it was kneeling at a water hole. I've seen the horns in his studio, and it's exactly to scale. A marvelous buck, and sculpture. The patina where the...
I'm not a "Western" or "Wildlife" art fan, but for my money, there is none better than Carl Rungius. My avatar is a small oil study Rungius did. I've been privileged to handle a number of his pieces. He's an absolute master.
Whatever. Law enforcement always sees the darkest side of life, and in their world the sky is always falling. Promise you that guy hasn't lived much outside Montana. You want drugs? You should have seen NYC in the 1970's. This is nothing by contrast, and I promise you Colorado has infinitely...
