    YOUR success rate on elk.

3 Elk Tags - 3 Filled Tags 1 Cow- Draw, Rifle, Public Land, Guided-- I was 13 and my uncle wanted to scout an outfitter he planned on using for his limited entry tag the next year. Was fun but I wouldn't quite call it a true elk hunting experience as we filled the tag the morning of the first...

    Who's from WI, where at?

Live just outside Madison, grew up in the Upper Peninsula just over the border in Menominee. Very old thread but I'm amazed how many folks I've seen who either live or have lived in Wisconsin on Rokslide, pretty cool. The state has a rich hunting tradition that is for sure.

    Am I Tough Enough?

I certainly plan to find out this year. I've been very fortunate early in my elk hunting career-- a little hard work, some help, and a lot of luck went in to having success. Plenty of mistakes were made with each tag; minor altitude sickness, blown opportunities on bigger bulls, misses, improper...

Gritty Podcast Kifaru vs Stone Glacier

In other words, the goal of the podcast was to bash Kifaru. Just disappointing at this point and unnecessary. Both are quality companies for their own reasons and everyone will have their preferences but come on man, get over yourself.

New Backcountry Hunter- 2 Person Shelter

My wife and I explored moving to Salt Lake City from Madison not to long ago. I have friends in Spanish Fork and Ogden. Most recently we were very close to moving to Bend, Oregon. She doesn't hunt but is an ultra trail runner and we both love the mountains. One of these times I'll actually get...

New Backcountry Hunter- 2 Person Shelter

Seems to be a pretty consistent theme among many experienced backpack hunters. Their sleep system seems to be where they don't mind a little extra weight in exchange for comfort. My goal is to just not get to carried away. Outside of the shelter, I'm looking at a Big Agnes Q-Core SLX or Deluxe...

New Backcountry Hunter- 2 Person Shelter

My gut is telling me to get the sawtooth for this hunt and go with a more UL option in the future if I do happen to plan something solo. The weight difference to me doesn't seem like much but I'm sure those can be a backpack hunters regrettable last words. Also trying to remember there will be...

New Backcountry Hunter- 2 Person Shelter

Myself and a buddy are planning to do a backcountry elk hunt this year. We are both fairly large human beings (6'4-240 and 6'1-200 with athletic builds). With this being my first backcountry experience and my buddies first western hunt period, I'm trying to avoid us being the newbies with a...

    One and Done?

My wife shot a 6 point with her dad when she was younger, hasn't went elk hunting since. That being said, she absolutely loves the mountains, trail running, hiking, etc. which she got that passion from her elk hunt so not sure she counts but closest thing I can think of. I grew up in the...

Excited to follow along on your 2020 adventures this year, @les welch . I myself will be getting back out west for elk after missing the last two years. More Colorado OTC archery units set to move to draw in 2020...

Agree. My father in law called a retired CPW connection of his who still "helps advise" and the guy made it sound like he should be pretty much guaranteed to draw if he puts it down as his second choice on his application. The guy did give him a disclaimer of "at least for the first year"...
