I just dropped my trimmed bear meat off at a butcher to have it made into 4 different types of sausage. I paid between $3.00 and $4.40 per pound depending on sausage type. I feel like I got a pretty good deal but I have never paid for processing before. At this price I'll likely do it again...
If you're talking about a guided trip, like waterfowl in an established blind over a well-trained dog, I can't recommend it highly enough. My semi annual Louisiana duck hunts with my guide cousin are the best times I've ever had. Not just the best times hunting but the best times ever. Don't...
I duck hunt on public land a lot. All my decent spots require a big hike in. The really good hunts are second to none in terms of gratification. However, it took me 5 years to get even one really good public land DIY hunt. Now I'm lucky if I get 3 bangers in a season of 15-20 hunts. There is...
That seems like the right answer. Transitioning to waterfowl or upland hunting out of frustration can only lead to more frustration. Also, you can scout for next year while bear hunting.
We roll out the big camp for archery mule deer and fall bear, backpack to scout, and hunt whitetail and land birds mostly from home. For waterfowl etc, truck is base. Sometimes I sleep in the subi for ducks and ice fish.
Thank you! I can't believe I got so lucky. He's my first bear as the trigger man. I have a video of the rough measurements but the site won't let me upload video or screenshots from video. Says the files are too big.
I'll start:
Our black bear opened here in Washington on August 1. I scouted a new area over the summer, narrowed it down to one ridge and a couple drainages. My buddy and I scouted the area for ripe berries the third weekend of July. I set up camp, checked the spots and made the plan on July 31...
A minimalist slide in camper would be hard to beat. No plumbing or electrical. Just run a heater, water jug, a lantern and poop outside. Plenty of room for gear and sleep without all the BS that comes with maintaining a camper.
Heading into 1L. No P and no TO. Might get some P in year 2&3 but no TO for 3 more years. Just finished college. Fall is always busy. I miss working construction full time and being able to schedule time off.
It was a busy year with school and work. Passed up some deer opportunities that I regret now. Duck hunting finally clicked for me last season even with the limited time. Managed to get on a lot of birds and have a lot of fun with the dog. Two archery turkeys, 37 ducks, 18 quail, a pheasant, a...
Loose in the detachable lid. I don't put anything in my pack in bags any more except for one dry bag. I also remove all the desiccant packs from meals and jerky. Saves ounces.
I'm really impressed by Ken Onion knives. I carry the Kershaw Leek for everything from box cutting at home to field dressing on backpack hunts. It's my favorite all-around knife of all time.
