    Bear spray or pistol?

    I agree with most of your thoughts, however, remember that bear spray can be affected by wind. And, if you are downwind, it can come back and be debilitating. Short of a shotgun or high-powered rifle, which can be clumsy to carry, I would recommend 10MM caliber or higher.
