What kind of bivy do you have? I motocamp a lot and am looking for a lighter setup than my current 2 man REI tent. I’m looking at a pad, quilt, and bivy with a 10x10 tarp for bad weather.
That’s a decision to make before you even set into the woods. If your goal before the trip is any legal bull or any legal elk, then of course you take it. If your goal is a mature bull, then you should let it walk.
Ended up making it to Durango today. Other than a few showers in the am, it was a great day to ride. Had a good lunch at Steamworks before making a trip to one of the areas I am considering. Saw a small herd of elk along the highway (now I just have to follow them for the next 4 months). Paid a...
☝️This is the kind of intel we’re all looking for. Now let me just call CPW and see if there are any of them leftover “Non-Resident Spring Elk” Tags available. 😁
If I make it up, it’s going to be tomorrow. I’m not going to do any kind of real scouting, I’ll likely never get off the bike. If theres some forest roads open, great. If not, there’s still some great riding out there.
The last time I went elk hunting was 2013 I think, with a Wyoming rifle cow tag. One day I saw what I thought may be an elk in some dark timber. I looked at it through my binoculars several times over a couple of minutes before determining it was a log. As soon as I put my binos away and started...
I’m up near Durango for the next few days and hopefully I’ll be able to break away and get some “scouting” in. I say “scouting” because honestly, I’m probably just going to ride my motorcycle and see how far up the roads I can get before snow turns me around.
Through GE I’ve found I think two...
Thank you both for the replies, I certainly appreciate it. Decreasing elk numbers, increasing hunting pressure and steep nasty terrain seem to be a common trend I'm finding with OTC units. Maybe I'm just being naive, but I think I can at least work with the terrain, it's better than having all...
I'm early in the process of getting together an OTC archery hunt in Colorado. I’ve been looking hard at the units around Durango (mostly 75 and 751). On paper, they look good, there are definitely elk in the area. But the hunter success rate in those units is pretty low, in the single digits...
Good afternoon everyone. I'm starting to get back into archery hunting after about a decade long hiatus. I am planning to head up to Colorado this fall and try my hand at an OTC archery elk hunt. Hope to learn all I can. Thanks.
