You did it right man! Great running into you and the rest of the crew coming out of Gana up in the Wells. I’m now inspired enough to write mine up and post it as well.
Don’t bother with salt unless you can flesh and turn a cape completely. Do the best you can, make sure you know how to at least get it face caped, and take saw to cap the skull and split the antlers. Keep it cool, clean and dry. If you kill early, spend the time to flesh the hide as best you...
Can confirm on that. Hunted the north side of the island in December. Got blasted with ice, wind, rain and snow. Saw winterkill yearlings and does and that was before real winter set in.
I can’t speak to the outfitter mentioned by the OP, but I can also affirm that WTHO should be the first and last call you should make for an Aoudad hunt. He’s got first class guides, access to a wide variety of country (something for everyone) and most importantly, incredible animals.
If I’ve gotta carry it for 10+ days on my back, I’m taking a treated down bag in a waterproof roll top dry bag. If it floats or goes on a horse, I’d say take the synthetic. AK hunts, especially down on the rivers and lakes, are a much damper environment.
I’m taking a chilkoot 15 and the neoair xlite on a sheep hunt in the NWT in early August. I’ve used that same setup in Montana during rifle elk/deer in mid to late October and been toasty and comfortable.
That sounds like an awesome hunt. I'm gonna bring the thermarest for backpacking and 2/3 of Z rest for a glassing pad/chair/insurance.
Im definitely gonna let them take care of the food. I know some guys take their own because they're picky, but that aint me. I take a few choice snacks and...
Thanks Doc,
I’m thinking the spotter would be nice to have, especially for some phoneskope videos at long range. I usually leave the pack at home when we head to the beach, but a long tuck in soft sand sounds like it may help with all the little calf muscles you don’t use down here.
As far...
Headed up the NWT for sheep/bou August 5-10 with ARRO. For the guys who have been there and done that, I’m looking for a little advice. I’ve got my clothing system, boots, pack, tent etc pretty well dialed. But I’m still unsure on a few key things:
1. Did you take a tripod and spotter or...
Phenomenal hunt and a great write up. I’m headed up there in early August (hunt was delayed a year due to the border opening late). Hopefully my first of many trips to the NWT.
We get to Kotzebue on Monday and are scheduled to fly into the field on Tuesday. I’ve read this order and the updated city and borough orders as well.
I get the feeling from reading some of the comments on the NWAB Facebook page that some folks aren’t too keen on non residents hunting up...
I’m definitely packing everything in dry bags and wearing my waders and xtratufs on the plane.
Hopefully we can get to some more solid ground to set up camp, even if it involves a bit of a hump.
We’ll be right there with you. 4 man group flying out of kotz sept 1. I think our transporter uses mostly float planes, but following for the same advice.
I get the impression the transporters use the same sites pretty frequently, so there should be a good indication of about where guys have...
I got a kick out of this thread. Just goes to show you shouldn’t believe everything you hear on the internet.
I’ve got a clymr stock and bottom metal on its way to the house as we speak. Customer service has been second to none, Mitch has been super helpful.
Already thinking I need a long...
We got into this situation last year. First time applying, did not draw a combo tag. Got the refund check fairly quickly. Then, we were able to scramble for a non resident general elk tag. There was such a demand, that the system crashed. Montana actually stepped up on this one and issued a...
