Does this need trekking poles to pitch? What happens when you leave base camp and take the trekking poles? do you have to break down the shelter and take it with you?
I think I'm stuck at about 2lb per day even with high quality, calorie dense choices. Not blessed with the best build for mountain hunting, but I'm strong and lean and I don't skip leg day or neglect the cardio. I train specifically for sheep hunting. I'm hooked. I think the best I can do is...
I have heard of people using a short pad and a pack for their feet. What do you do if your pack is wet though? I guess if you wipe off the pack cover and leave it on, you would have a dry surface.
For the quilt, I move around a lot in my sleep. Is the temp rating based on having the quilt...
Good point. I pack at least 2 lb per day. So at most an extra half day. At 225, 1lb isn’t much % wise, but trimming ounces adds up. Just looking to get pack as lean as possible. Also not likely to be carrying tent/bag/pad daily. Will be carrying it with half a sheep though... hopefully
Wondering if I could save weight and go with a 30 degree bag for August hunt in the Brooks. I would be bringing a puffy set for glassing and safety in case I have to spend the night on the mountain... could layer up under the 30 degree bag if It got cold.
I took a 15 degree bag to the Alaska...
Recurveman, I received a PM from a very reputable member here recommending him after my initial post. I called Luke and asked him questions that were important to me. Average age of rams, success rates, lots about the hunt experience... I want a realistic shot at a really nice ram. He...
I appreciate everyone's input especially those I spoke with over the phone. I feel very confident with my decision to hunt with Luke. Now the training begins! I am 20 months out. Figured I would document the process of preparing in this thread both for advice and to hold myself accountable...
That's good info. I've had my Yukons for a few years, but my Chugach haven't seen much action. I may save the weight and go with Chugach on my hunt in the Brooks. Thanks for the feedback.
Anyone tried wearing a light base layer and rain paint full time for a sheep hunt? I'm thinking about ditching the attack pants and just going with a peloton 97 and either Yukon or Chugach. Leaning towards Yukon for durability and pockets since I'm thinking about wearing them full time.
Thank you for the recommendations. I appreciate you taking the time to respond. From what I have researched the Canadian outfitters seem to have exceptional ram quality. Have you hunted with Utlima Thule, artic red, Jonah's Alaskan adventures?
I'm planning my next Dall sheep hunt and looking for recommendations on outfitters.
My first sheep hunt in 16 was awesome. Outfitter was very customer service oriented, first guide quit, but second guide was a total pro. I swear he was a Jedi. Problem was ram quality. I shot the only...
