low cut early season hunting shoe

I have a pair of Lowa Renegade GTX Lo and I love 'em. Their regular price is hard to justify but maybe you could find them on sale or factory defects on Ebay like I did.

    PEAX SOLITUDE 4 TIPI GIVEAWAY

Favorite Feature: The thing would add less than 3.5 lbs to your setup assuming you're already carrying trekking poles, and I do.

    Tyvek as a tent footprint

I have used a Tyvek footprint under my 4-man tent for about 7-8 years. It is not fraying/tearing at the edges at all. But remember, you don't want the footprint sticking out from underneath your tent. It should be a couple inches shorter in each dimension. Helps keep water from ponding under...

    Are all sleeping pads terrible?

    Exped.

Do you pack in a cot and sleeping pad?

Just a pad. With a good, quality pad, I don't know how a cot would improve the setup.

Like some Backcountry Sleeping Pad Suggestions Please!!

I have slept on two ridgerests stacked as you describe. It feels like sleeping on a sheet of plywood - terrible.

Like some Backcountry Sleeping Pad Suggestions Please!!

For comfort and durability I don't think you can beat an Exped - I have had my Synmat7 for over 15 years - sent it back once for a leak I couldn't find, and Exped sent me a new one. I have slept on the BA Insulated Air Core Ultra -- it's lightweight, but not nearly as comfy as my Synmat7 or my...

@gr8fuldoug Do you know if the Ares scope has a similar eye relief as the Hawke model in this category? Would it be any better or worse? Thanks for your info, guys!

    Bino harness recommendation

FWIW, the owner of Boundless Performance wrote me back in response to an inquiry about their harness. Here's what he said: "If we are comparing like for like, we developed our bag to be similar to the Vortex Guide Bino. The difference is structure. Our bag is more lightweight, and flexible...

    Bino harness recommendation

And just noticed that this one has the same type of latch as the vortex (in fact it looks like a copycat of the Vortex guide pack). So probably out of the running...

    Bino harness recommendation

Yes, agree. The elastic latch system on the Vortex harness is hot garbage. I have had snow-covered binos more than once because they fell out while I was kneeling/bending. I should have purchased a different harness years ago. I am looking at getting a new one for next season. Spendy suckers.

Elk hunting the Bob Marshall wilderness

I am afraid you're right. Sucks, too. The combination of decent backpacking weather and rifle hunting made for a fun adventure. By the time general rifle season rolls around, if you want to pack in somewhere, you're stuck dealing with snow or at least having to be prepared for snow -- I can't...
