Spot and stalk - Prairie Whitetails

It's almost that time if year again... When the rut is rocking and bucks are on their feet with their guard down. It's also one of my favorite times of year, because that's when my friends and family come to visit, and we feel like little kids again playing cowboys and Indians, but this time...

    Hunting with my Big Brother

One of the best parts of hunting is the camaraderie that can be had when hunting with family and friends. This hunt was the first time my brother and I had hunted together in a long time, and we had a blast stalking this buck like a couple of hungry wolves. My brother Aaron is the epitome of...

170" Whitey killed on the ground @ 25 yds

For sure!!!! That's why I ended up so close. My plan was to get the wind in any face and then crawl upon for a 100 yard shot. Didn't expect him to walk up the hill at me to 25 steps!!! LOL.... It was a huge adrenaline rush, I can tell you that!

170" Whitey killed on the ground @ 25 yds

I bought a Mac Book lap top and am running Final Cut Pro. Really like it so far. Lots of YT tutorials.

Cold day on the Montana prairie

This hunt was a brutally cold day, but my 11 year old daughter "manned" up and headed out with me for an evening hunt. She was rewarded for her efforts. and made an excellent shot with the little ol' 22-250. Good times and lots of smiles.... and cold fingers!

    Wife hammered a good one!

My wife doesn't have much time to hunt with me these days, but on this particular day I was able to coax her out of a warm bed on a Saturday morning to go out into the wind swept prairie, and put the chase on a big, rutted up buck. She wasn't too happy with me at first, but felt a whole lot...

170" Whitey killed on the ground @ 25 yds

Definitely one of the best hunts of my life, including being very surprised how big this buck was. I knew he would be my personal best as I started the sneak, but I had no idea he was quite as big as he was. I was using a .22-250 that I had bought for the kids and my wife that year, with 60...

Best Bear Hunt I've ever had!!

I was not able to get out this year to bear hunt, but this particular hunt was the best evening sit I've ever had. I had multiple bears in and out all night long, and was able to witness a lot of bear behavior that was fun to just sit and watch. There had been a big boar coming into that...

    What's your "Happy place"?

This is another one for me... Haven't been in 5 years, but for a while it was our annual summer ritual. There is a big body of water here in MT with various islands throughout. The islands are pine covered, loaded with huckleberries, and half tame mule deer, and it is a very private camp...

Man, you should write a book. That was really excellent. Felt like I was there.... Thanks for sharing that.

    Decoys

In years past I always used the Montana decoy. Never like how flimsy it was in the wind, for what a pain it was to stake it down when I was in a hurry. I started using a plastic one (can't remember the brand), but it's heavy and somewhat loud to set up. Last year I switched to the Ultimate...

    What's your "Happy place"?

Often times when I'm stressed or want to imagine a place of solitude, I think on my elk spot, the different draws, timbered hillsides, the magical mornings I've spent creeping up to a herd of bugles, or waking up 2 hours before daylight to the sound of rain hitting my teepee and snuggling back...

    Which sight?

Ended up going with the Option 8. It seems pretty bright, (not as much as the MBG but still good) and the ability to dial a single open while retaining the option of having fixed pins is really nice. Very hunting friendly concept. Just waiting on the bow and then I can mount it and try it out...

    Which sight?

Would you recommend a 5 pin or 3? I'm assuming you set the bottom pin as your dial pin?

    Which sight?

I'm in the process if building a new setup for this coming season. For the past 12 years I have used the Spot Hogg 7 pin fixed. (Western game hunter) I like the quick ability to shoot out to farther distances for follow up shots, etc, but have realized the need for more precision if I have the...

    6.5 Creedmoor performs Flawlessly

My 12 year old daughter had the good fortune to draw her 1st pronghorn antelope tag this past fall. We had a great time looking for speedgoats, but we weren't able to get out for the opener weekend, which made for a tougher hunt, but ultimately more rewarding. I bumped the kids up this past...
