Any backyard(maple sap) boilers out there.

I am no expert, but that is a good sap to syrup ratio. I notice differences between individual trees and segments of the season but overall run about 40-50 to 1.

Any backyard(maple sap) boilers out there.

You never know what you might learn on Rokslide--if you have access to a few sugar maples, the cost on entry is low--you need taps, buckets or bags for the sap and a way to boil it down outside. You can do it simple and small scale (hotel pan on a wood fire/propane burner) or as big, complex or...

Any backyard(maple sap) boilers out there.

We are talking about maple syrup in case that isn't clear. Weak sugar season for me in my always small operation (~15 taps)--it is already over and a small yield ( about 2 gallons) compared to past few years.

    Rockslide office chair

Check out the Toto Washlet bidet seat for the Japanese toilet experience at a fraction of the cost--if you have an outlet nearby you can install it yourself on an existing toilet in 15 minutes. It's awesome and I don't understand why more folks don't have them. Treat yourself right.

How young is to young to hunt a dog

That is a huge accomplishment--thanks for reporting back on how it went--way to go!

Collar with a "On Point" indicator

The Garmin Alpha will tell you when the dog is on point (or more accurately, when it detects that the dog isn't moving for a period of time) and you can get a bearing and distance from the unit or watch that goes with it (i got the cheapest garmin watch that has that functionality and it is good...

    Glacier National Park

One man's opinion: I have been to Glacier and to Mt. Rushmore. I would not trade an extra hour in Glacier for a day near Mt. Rushmore--visiting Rushmore was too crowded and not much value for me over a picture of Mt. Rushmore. You may see it differently.

    Parararp opinions

I have a Kifaru Supertarp and I used to love that thing--it was a lot of shelter for the weight and could be pitched in a storm-worthy configuration more easily than a flat tarp. Like the earlier poster, mine survived some pretty substantial snowload on occassion. I would not go for something...

    Canoe options?

Not sure where the OP is located, but keep an eye on Craigslist for used canoes--for what you are describing, a 16 or 17 foot symmetrical royalex "prospectors" is about right and can be had for less than $1k, sometimes much less.--keep an eye out for Old Town and Mad River versions as they are...

    Eastcoasters hunting out West

I have done it a few times flying from NYC to Montana. Zero issues with rifle or bow at LaGuardia airport--they see it all the time and handle it straightforwardly like professionals. For whatever reason an NYC cop is generally there and takes a peek, not sure why. I put a lot of other stuff...

    Youth outdoor book recommendations?

My son loved all the Gary Paulsen books, particularly the Hatchet series and Tuckett ones. Another one he really enjoyed were the Lew & Charlie stories that appeared in Fur, Fish & Game. You can buy them as analogies from FFG too.

    Hot Water Rinse of Meat

I am in the "no water on meat" camp unless dealing with a specific problem of something getting on a part of the carcass that I don't want on it. Even then, I am more likely to cut away the offending layer. I am happier with the quality of fish and game both when no water is involved in the...

    hot tents and cots?

I have done two full-sized cots in a Kifaru 6 Man tipi, sometimes with a third guy on a pad, but no stove. It was fine for what we were doing, but the geometry of the tipi and cot combination is not optimal for efficient use of space, though as others said it is nice to be able to sit down and...

    Is a meat grinder necessary?

I have had great luck with an all-stainless steel attachment that runs off the kitchenaid mixer PTO--found it on Amazon. If you have the mixer it is a good way to go as others have said it it isn't the Kitchenaid brand one and I think it is better because of the metal construction. Back in...

    SXS advice

Question for the OP: would this be your first SxS? If so, one thing to watch for is that some of your preferences may change pretty fast once you start hunting with one and it is a big investment. Maybe see if you can borrow one for a couple of hunts or more from a friend to see what you like...

How young is to young to hunt a dog

My 2 cents worth---keep it positive and be careful with gunfire--there is a difference between a blank in training and all hell breaking loose with a few autoloaders in a blind. Much better to be sure your dog is fine with gunfire gradually associating loader, closer and more shots with good...

    Pad & Quilt Help

Based on what you wrote, I would try an exped downmat and an EE long wide quilt (0 degree). I don't have experience with your pad, but seems like the r value is too low. I am no quilt expert, but it seems to me that people are trying to do two different things with them and you need to...

    Dog training deer recovery

You might want to check out blood trailing training information from the JGHV (umbrella training group for the versatile breeds in Germany)--there are some good ideas/tips there as blood tracking is a part of their testing system you can google up. "Tracking Dogs for Finding Wounded Deer" a...

When to bring a hot tent

You don't need a stove under most realistic hunting conditions, but a few factors in favor of choosing to bring one are not changing camp location every day, wetness, and cold long nights. I don't think anyone has described it better than Patrick Smith in the old essays that used to be on the...

Amen on the Exped DownMat--worth the weight to me.
