This sounds like the best idea yet! Where would I find a "cargo net/panel" for a particular pack? And, do these usually have side panels as well to keep the quarter/ meat bag from slipping from side to side? One of the reasons I kept using my old USMC pack all of these years was because I...
Any idea where I would find one in Idaho to try before I drop a bunch of cash? I've learned the hard way that if they don't fit my body well, I won't use it.
I'll go and try a Kelty at Sportsmans. I'd like to try others, but there are very few places in N Idaho that have a variety of packs. Thanks for the suggestions!
Maybe I'll try them out again. I had one from Alps a few years ago that I used for 1 load and hated it. I could not get the fit right, the quarter slid all over the place, and I had hot spots from the metal frame hitting my back. Haven't used it since. Any brands other than Alps you'd recommend?
Now that I'm in my mid/late 50s, I'm mostly hunting out of camp, truck, or sxs rather than packing in, in North Idaho. I hunt solo and I have a Kuiu Venture 2300 and two different Badlands day packs that I usually use to carry gear for boning/ skinning and a game bag or two for the first pack...
In 2001 I watched a pack of coyotes take down a cow elk in AZ unit 4A. They chased her for about 1/4 mile as I watched in the open northern part of that unit and finally got her down. Yotes all over that area, but never saw them try that crap on a herd, just that old solo cow.
Thanks for the input everyone. I think I'll continue to be conservative- I'd rather eat tag soup and enjoy the experience than wound an elk. I just got to reading other articles about people having great success with quartering-to shots. But, even with a great knowledge of elk anatomy I am...
I know this has been discussed on other forums, but wanted your thoughts: I shoot archery all year round, and I'm mostly a solo hunter with a 70 lb bow. I've taken 5 of my 15 elk with archery equipment. This year, I was at full draw on several occasions to elk I called in, but all they...
Opening morning, go north almost to Windslow. They will be in huge herds out in antelope country. After opening morning, they will drop into the canyons on both sides of the unit- good luck getting to them then. Try the transition juniper/ pine country after they run off of the plains.
