    Running for Shots

I've ran after a few hogs but always with cover and usually from a very long distance on edge of the woods to get a closer shot. I've had it work for me on several occasions, but that's hogs. I've run on the other side of the mountain after a heard of elk that were on the move for a better...

    lateral heel blisters fix?

Yeah, that's my experience. It will give me some relief for a while but it often rolls off. With the Danners I'm wearing now I don't have to worry about my heals anymore but after 3 or 4 days worth of hiking the tops of my toes will get raw, which isn't as debilitating as bleeding heals but...

    lateral heel blisters fix?

I just stumbled upon Leukotape today looking at some game bags on Amazon. I always end up using the hell out of moleskin. I will probably be getting some tape.

Thinking about moving out to CO

The move was a little hard on my wife as well. We left everything. She has a really close family, and we had nobody out here. We've made a handful of good friends though and she is really happy. We live all the way out close to Fairplay(Southpark), and she was really concerned about it...

Thinking about moving out to CO

And 285 is one of the most dangerous highways in the nation. I worry about that for when my kids come of driving age. The only place I've seen 285 shut down is at Kenosha Pass, other than when a semi rolls on it somewhere, blocking it. In the summer you have ridiculous camping traffic heading...

    Hercules...Hercules....Hercules!!!!

Bone-in quarters are typically in the neighborhood of 75 pounds. If and when I get another elk I'll make the first trip with the straps and loins. If its a cow I will throw something else in....a bull and I'll add the antlers. I'll just take my time finding a good way to keep the rest cool...

Thinking about moving out to CO

I don't do enough hanging out in the Denver area to know all the ends and outs but if I were going to pick a spot east of Evergreen to live, it would be in the Golden/Lakewood/Littleton area. After that, Arvada/Westminster/Superior. We have friends that live in Castle Rock that we go visit...

    lateral heel blisters fix?

Anything Redwing/Irish Setter will give me blisters with very little hiking. It seems like everything else besides a select few pairs of boots do the same with prolonged hiking. 2 years ago I bought a pair of Danner Mountain Light II's for moderate hiking and ended up wearing them for all my...

Thinking about moving out to CO

Like they say in Boulder, "you were born that way". I guess you can't help it. ;) Just kidding. I've done a lot of recreational hiking in the Flat Irons. Ignorance was bliss back then. I was brand new. It was a good workout and a good way to get acclimated on safe trails with lots of...

    Coyote brown or foliage green

I've felt both Coyote and Foliage blend in good in Central to Western Colorado with the upper hand going to Coyote. Tactically I don't think Ranger Green will be any better than Coyote. It sure looks nice though.

Hunter Kills 3 Bighorn in Montana

I made a honest mistake hunting and self reported. I guess I was lucky it didn't involve sheep. I was treated with respect. I did pay my fine though with no other penalties although nowhere close to $32,000. It's unfortunate that this happened but I think after self reporting and paying...

    CO Advice

Good chance at success in 70, but I would look elsewhere with those points. I'm not a horn hunter though.

Percent of Elk Killed - mornings or afternoon?

I've only killed 2 elk. First one was at first light. Second was about 3:30 in the afternoon. I hunt the hardest in the morning and evening.

    Fixed blade or folder?

I like to take a heavier fixed blade with me hunting. I find they work better for me pulling the hide back. I use a folder for smaller chores. I've never used the Havalon knives but they are gaining popularity. Everyone is different but when I skin with a really sharp, thin blade I end up...

    Hunting with solid colors?

    Hard to argue with success.

    Hercules...Hercules....Hercules!!!!

There's also easier ways to eat elk, even than shooting them from a truck. On this particular mountain there's a couple of trails in, all foot traffic or horses. You can't always go as the crow flies either. 10 plus miles of wilderness trail is very common in Colorado. We chose to push out a...

Training while on Low Carb Diet

Looks like a decent program workout wise. As far as the diet, you will have to give it time and see how you feel. You will have a hard time maintaining strength and you might have to experiment with your caloric intake....carbs as well. Sometimes performance and some unsightly visceral fat...

Training while on Low Carb Diet

What a fun thread! I love it when guys start throwing around credentials. I don't have any by the way. My life has been changed for the better with a high fat/low carb diet as well as many others around me. Haters be hate'n. Doctors be in disagreement with each other like religious...

    Hercules...Hercules....Hercules!!!!

I would agree....very few. And I'm not one of them, but I've done between 8 and 9...only about 2 miles to the road/trail, no atv's/motorized vehicles allowed.

    Hercules...Hercules....Hercules!!!!

2 to 4 miles is no picnic but still very feasible for me. My issue is spike camp is about 3.5 mile in, then you are pushing another 4 to 5 miles from there to get to where we hunt. Often times you end up having to cross literally 1/4 mile of downed timber to get to the road that takes us down...
