Help me spend my money on a rifle for Hog hunting

I have had a lot of success using my AR in 6.5 Grendel on pigs. The Hornady 123gr SST does a good job with them.

Light(ish) weight ball head for glassing/shooting

I have been using this head with my rifle to shoot off of an my spotting scope for a few months. Finally got into the field with it last weekend for some South Texas axis hunting (sadly no luck, but that is a different thread). The ball head with handlebar controls is the easiest setup to use...

Aoudad hunt near Big Bend, TX

Good looking ram! I really enjoy every minute spent in that part of the country when camping and cannot wait to be out there with a rifle looking for ram. Thanks for the motivation.

    Group difference suppressed/un-suppressed

I was surprised to see such good results with 130gr loads in your Grendel. My JP 6.5 Grendel is a dime stacker with 123gr loads with and without my Energetic Arms Vox suppressor. The only difference is POI shift. That said - what profile & length is your barrel? A lighter profile will be more...

    Antlers growing yet?

Game camera over the protein blocks show the majority of the bucks in Central Texas have at least got nubs going with maybe 3 or 4 having some good mass already. But this is the first year we have put out protein all year at this location.

    Any Hog Hunters Here..?

Thanks. We have a couple more that size hanging around the area we are trying to drop the hammer on. We are having a good time testing different calibers on the pigs.

The bad thing about maven binoculars

Ironic; I fell victim to the Maven B series earlier this year. Then I ordered a NF scope for my new rifle. Today's range trip has me pricing better scopes to replace a couple basic Vortex scopes. They worked okay until I knew better but now I know better.

What did you do at the range today?

Quick range trip between night time pig hunts to zero my new Tikka Timberline 6.5CM w/ NF SHV 3-10x42 glass. My wife went with to get some trigger time with her Tikka T3X in 6.5CM also. New rifle zeroed quickly and will get some field time tonight (only shooting out to maybe 100 yds).

    Welcome Mountain Tactical—Tikka Specialists

Just a heads up; the new website is not loading well. I installed all the parts I ordered last week and went to order a few more parts; but the website fails to load the catalog of parts. The overall template loads but the page data never does. I did clear cache before trying again with the...

Equipment versus practice posts and Rifle practice/shooting

This drill reminds me a lot of one of the pass/fail shooting test at the Marine Designated Marksmen school at Dam Neck. I thought I was a good shooter till that school. Afterwards (and all the practice & real world after that) I completely revised my standards. It is great to see standards and...

    DIY Texas Aoudad hunt

Favorite thread on RokSlide right now. An aoudad hunt is my current obsession so I am soaking up as much as I can. Any opinions on tripod? I am looking to pick one up for shooting use and am debating going with something that will also work for a hunt like this.

West Texas Aoudad - Shameless Plug

Good timing and thanks for the post. I am doing the keyboard / phone work of researching who I want to book my hunt with. Posts like this help a lot.

How does chopping a barrel alter velocity nodes?

From research with no measured scientific data - changing the barrel length will impact the barrel harmonics but the barrel is still long enough that the chamber pressure will not be changed in a noticeable way. The danger area will be getting max velocity with faster powders without blowing up...

Vortex razor at sportsman's warehouse $750

Yep... it got me. Great timing though as I have been doing a lot of debating how to justify ordering a RRS tripod setup. Now I just saved a good bit on the spotting scope so it is "easier" to get the RRS. lol Or something like that.
