Hey Hobbes. I'm thinking I remember you from the SageCreek forums. What part of Montana are you living in? The country your pics show looks alot like the north central continental divide (lodgepoles, some parks, and a ton of beetle kill). It looks like some good country, and if that's the...
I'd agree with Joshlander...I've noticed the same thing.
With this in mind, I don't put a ton of weight upon where I find mature bulls hanging out together during scouting trips in early/mid August. I'll go back to those same places during opener in the 1st week of September and I'm always...
Well said. I feel I'm a much happier hunter, successful or not, if I've made a strong efforts to get close encounters with bulls rather than sit and wait for the elk to make things happen for me. In the thick jungles we hunt in NW Montana, you may never even see an elk all season unless you...
Both. I was seconding Elknut's statement about calling aggressively, primarily thinking aggressive bull sounds that raise elk interest enough that they have to come in to check it out.
But I also put in a note that being aggressive moving on elk and towards set ups has helped me greatly too...
Ditto that. And the agressiveness also applies to moving in on them, rather and sitting and waiting for them to come to you...at least in the thick stuff.
Also, in my case, drawing too early (not too late). I've had better success with late draws. Every early draw seems to make a small noise...
I've historically been a frustrated early season archer. I've had zero harvest success early season (late August/1st week of September). Had one silent calling episode bring in a rogue cow from far off ~Sept. 1, but other than that I've been 0-for-many. I can likely attribute this to the fact...
I'm a sweat maniac as well...and a stinky one to boot. Wind is #1. Only problem being that the elk know which way it's going too.
I wash all my hunting clothes in unscented detergent, and have found some refuge from my own odors by carrying a clean replacement shirt in my pack when/if the...
