I am a native of New Zealand, and was raised on a mixed farm on the Banks Peninsula, Canterbury New Zealand.
My family were farmers, and originally plantation owners from, Java, Indonesia (Indo-Dutch) Hunting has not been a family tradition for at least the previous two generations, so I was self taught, and learnt to hunt out of economic necessity. I hunted Wild Deer to pay my way through University in the early 1980’s.
Hunting was a natural fit to my established interests in Mountaineering and Stamina sports.
I have always had a sense of adventure, and a burning desire to see what is over the next hill.
I studied Economics and completed an Agricultural Commerce Degree from Lincoln University, and went on to become an Overseer in the development of native lands in New Zealand, and working with various tribes of Maori people (New Zealand aboriginals.) Later in my career, I entered the field of Banking, and specifically in the field of Rural Banking. I did this for 15 years...... But there comes a time, when enough is enough..... I abandoned my professional career to follow my passion, which is hunting, and have now been a Fulltime Professional Hunter for 12 seasons. Do I regret it??? Yes sometimes, I miss the corporate buzz, the steady salary, comfortable car and benefits that go with a high stress career.
But... could I ask for anything better, but to follow my dreams, to feel the mountain winds cutting into my face, and to see the dreams of others fulfilled on a daily basis... and I have not worn a suit and tie for 12 years...
I have no regrets, and love every moment of my life. Along the way, in recent years, I have studied Post Graduate, M App Sci, in International Rural Development, with specialist papers in Wildlife Management and Sustainable Tourism. It is a natural progression, that I become involved in a Hunting Tourism project that benefits both conservation and the local economy of a third world country.
I spent some years involved with Search and Rescue Operations, including 5 years in a Mountain and Cliff Rescue team. In this role, I have seen the “Fall-out” of a badly planned adventure.
Through training and experience, I have come to understand the logistics in planning a safe adventure, in often demanding physical conditions, like our Southern Alps or the Desert Mountains of Baluchistan.
Mountain hunting is my “First Love” and through travel and guiding, it has opened a world of contacts and friends, that has become my life
