Wow! Such a great video and great time! So glad you reposted this. I’m sure Kenzi‘s sold on elk hunting now. Great video footage too especially through the scope.
I’m a life long westerner, lived in Montana for a chunk of adult life, now Nevada (elk hunting is good here but for out of staters hard to get tags) I’d go for Wyoming if I were you. Lots of elk and higher success rates. But check success rates for any area/state you are looking at.
I took a quartering shot on a cow elk with my Ruger #1 7mm rem mag @ aprox 220 yds., while elk was beginning to run with rest of herd. Rested gun on boulder to take the shot. Act of G.d, will never happen again, but hit right through heart and dropped it immediately. Go with your 7mm - solid...
Did you contact Fish and Game in your area? They need to keep data on health conditions and may love your information. They will tell you EXACTLY what it is.
I was poor, putting myself as a single mom through grad school in Montana. Dad said, “We’re not giving you $, but I’ll give you a rifle. If you want to hunt great, if not, you have a rifle.” So I bought an otc deer tag, went out mid-day solo, and brought back a small doe. One shot, and meat...
Elk is the best meat you can eat, not just taste, but by the stats on nutrition. Don’t rule out deer and Pronghorn either - they help round out the years when we don’t get elk. Will your wife hunt too to make sure that freezer stays full?! Glad your little guys is well now. Quite an ordeal...
Adrenaline from tagging an elk blocks pain, but to go with the hypothetical…Call game warden or game biologist for the area and ask for help packing out and offer up some steaks to them. A mile is nothing. That said, I hunt/hike up to 5 miles in on a gimpy ankle that I broke years ago. It...
Aw geez so sorry. First, and I’m serious, switch to rifle hunting from now on. Time and time and time again bow hunters spend more time tracking wounded animals than instant one shot, down, pack out, in freezer. Track the animal more and ask for some help. Find him.
I picked up some Miley hunting dvds from thrift store. Eastman’s are good with great tips on open country vs forested, snow/rain behavior, early and rut. I definitely leaned a few tips.
I’ve never tagged a Miley buck and am hoping this is the year. We’ll be in steep and deep territory so trying to decide which rifle to bring: Kimber 8400 7mm REM mag with Zeus’s V4 Conquest scope - super light, synthetic stock accurate; or Ruger 1 .257 Wthby mag Leup. Scope - weighs a lot more...
