    The great sock debate 2024

I do love wool socks. Lately, though, I've been testing out uncushioned fully synthetic nylon/spandex socks. Feetures elite ultra-light. Apples and oranges comparison with wool, but they have been working for me in warm weather and light trail footwear.

    Quietkat 2 wheeled cargo trailer

Just to clarify, because the website pics don't make it obvious for either trailer: In the picture I posted, the black steel piece gets left on the bicycle and the trailer is attached/detached from it. It inserts into the silver aluminium piece that is at the end of the tongue. These are all...

    Quietkat 2 wheeled cargo trailer

The second picture shows the tongue without tongue-->axle connector. "Through axle" is something that is replacing QR in more bikes, and a through axle bike would need one of those replacement trailer-friendly through axles on the bike. You have a QR bike. I guess the second question is shaft...

    Quietkat 2 wheeled cargo trailer

I have one I got on a deep sale from quietkat. Got it because it was cheap. I haven't really tested high weight -- probably 40 pounds max. It works well enough behind a bike. I don't know that the "suspension" accomplishes anything versus the moon tires. I don't know how useful the articulation...

    Best two radio?

One bonus to ham is that you leave the option open to run your own "cross band repeat" station -- handhelds can hit a vehicle-mounted radio with a big antenna parked within a few km that will re-broadcast over a bigger hop.

    Trijicon prices?

I just got a credo 2-10x36 off [shipped-from-trijicon secret veteran/pro discount site] and saved I think $10 versus Eurooptic. Ship time was over 2 months.

    Hells canyon

There are dozens of Hells Canyons. I doubt the one I've spent time in is what you're referring to.

    QuietKat: Aftermarket Racks?

I've put 120lbs (muiti-day water load) on a Surly brand rear rack. They are very adjustable. I have a tubus on a second bike. The three cromoly rack manufacturers I know of are Tubus, OMM, and Surly/Salsa. I wouldn't hesitate to buy any steel rack used. Tubus tend to be cheaper if you order them...

    $300 Budget for a tripod.

I put together a pretty beefy Innorel for ~200 by buying straight from China. Same factory as some other-branded CF you can get here, but no warranty. It's taken a fair amount of abuse in travel strapped to the outside of a pack.

    Bourbon

The nice thing about Bookers 126 or Knob SB 120 is that they get a lot smoother when you add a handful of snow or a splash of stream water to bring them down to 80 proof.

Where can I buy these pack clips/hardware??

For grimlocs, it's probably worth mentioning: avoid ebay and amazon. The real nylon ones are not comparable to the chinese ABS knockoffs. The ABS knockoffs disintegrate quickly.

    Best Cheap Headlamp

Interesting seeing nobody recommend zebralight. They were the pinnacle of headlamps back in the day. A zebralight is the only headlamp I've had that failed in a way that inconvenienced me on the trail.

Which brand isobutane fuel are you using for your stoves?

Snow Peak when it's the same price. Because everything else by Snow Peak is so expensive that using their isobutane makes me feel bougie.

One item you wish you carried sooner?

Unmentioned here, I think... Two or three meters of lock wire or big orange box equivalent. It's like lighter gauge stainless steel baling wire. Using it like a twist-tie for a quick repair has saved me from a larger headache a couple times. Also, you can suspend things over a fire with it...

What's your go to water bottle

Caps beyond a certain level of fancy trap gunk and break. The camelbak magnetic lid falls between that level and nalgene. I like those. The biggest variant. I use the smallest variant as 2 of my 3 bike bottles, to keep the mouth-touching bits mud free.
