A study in a specific colorado unit showed 50% deer fawn mortality from coyotes, 50% from bear. I would like to see studies on adult deer mortality too, especially where there's a lot more predators. Last weekend in New Mexico a local guy up at a remote and hard to get to trailhead said the deer...
Been using polartec alpha for years, hands down beats grid fleece when bonded to thin slighlty wind resistant fabric. Ambient is a warmer upgrade. Still prefer my active shortsleeve hoody though, because the ambient jacket is too warm unless it's 20 degrees. The ambient hoody would be good...
I don't understand all the attack/mountain/ softshell weight favorites in here. Maybe I'm hunting wrong, but they're too hot for me. I can't walk 3 steps uphill in them. Sitka acsent or kryptek valhalla have been my ticket, wool undies if it's frosty, atom LT puffy pants if sitting around snow...
Update. I had a phone fall out the side pocket while doing the squat walk to sneak up on antelope. Luckily was able to backtrack my steps a couple hundred yards or so after the shot.
Update- the scope is fine for the range, 200 yards about. In the woods, 600 ish but low light and clarity very lacking. Had the chace to look through a razor 65, still lacks clarity though. So, I would not recommend for finding animals. I prefer my nice 8x binos but they really only work for...
After shooting longer distances with heavy arrows, the rest works fine but
1. Ground some material off the riser to eliminate the rest hitting the riser. Eliminate potential bounce (no evidence just worry) and extra noise.
2. Rest angle at up position and down position can't be adjusted enough...
I got one. Best value out there. Lightest weight. I haven't been able to try the others (vortex 11-33, more expensive kowa, nikon ed50) but none are lighter and cheaper and it has good mag. Low light loses brightness at 40x but that's expected. Updates soon
FMJs seem extra hard to index. Used a 36" clamp to test "dynamic" spine and FMJs it's very inconsistent. Using a spine deflection tool, also inconsistent. On pure carbon arrows, only about 50% of them have a very distinct spine through these tests. The rest are inconsistent meaning they'll bend...
The hoyt ventum was nice but too short on draw. The lower stabilizer mount requires less added weight. The carbons are gonna need more added weight to dampen vibration and stabilize. I'll update if you remind me in a couple months to see if the heavier bow performs in the mountains or causes...
Yes. The hoyt draw cycle is usually my favorite. Tried all the new bows at 3 different bow shops across the country this summer, went with bowtech ss34 because the draw on comfort setting is so nice. Helps with shoulder issues. Most carbons especially pse have sticking points near the back wall...
If you use a stabilizer and quiver the option archery quivalizer can shave some weight. The only thing I don't like is that it's so far out front you can almost induce a balanced wobble side to side and loaded with arrows in the wind it's not the best.
I have shot old 80s, 90s compounds, mid, and new bows, almost always seen string jumping on old ones for sure. I think the bow at the shot is the loudest sound and biggest factor. That initial sound is what makes them jump. Think about it this way too... if you're within their "safety bubble"...
I also have an Epsilon issue where the elevation micro adjust is very tough to turn at one point each revolution. Not sure if it will resolve. It's also hard to reach on the low profile mount style on a Bowtech SS34. There's plenty of room the knob could have been made taller. The arrow rest...
Considering how many there were in the area, figured I'd look into it a bit. Wondering if they displace the elk at all to help focus my efforts in areas away from them.
