Thanks Bob, that helps! Wasn't the N. Fork an extra week a couple years ago? But that was before most of the Eastside went to controlled hunt, and that tag was good for any general season unit too?
There are a few updates to the Trad Only hunts in 2023 in Oregon. I'm not sure I have my head wrapped around it yet. The tag/seasons overlap with some of the general draw archery tags and don't seem as exclusive. But maybe that's to allow a longer season even if it overlaps.
I would assume I would have to check it. Anything that can be used to hunt elk probably shouldn't be allowed as carry-on.
I'll check out Far North. I have a little deflex in the limbs, but a straight case should work.
I have some family trips coming up and would love to take the longbow(s) and a handful of arrows. What travel cases do you recommend for airline travel?
One piece longbow.
I just ordered a take down custom. But it will be a few months before it's ready.
I dipped my toe into traditional archery a few years ago. I've hunted with it every season since then, but when I'm getting more worried that I'm not going to fill the tag...I go back to my compound.
I enjoy shooting my longbow more than the compound and typically leave the compound at home...
I've been playing around with Hammer bullets. They are picky about the twist rates in your barrel.
My barrel twist wasn't fast enough for the 150s so I'm working up a load with the 136 Shock Hammers. H4831sc seems to do well for me .
General season tags will be OTC in both OR and WA.
I've used Carl Windle up in Forks for Bear, and I believe he does elk hunts too. Solid guy. Knows the area well.
A running joke in my circle is "...it was either a herd of bulls, or a squirrel."
We're more likely to put a stalk on a squirrel dropping cones. They sound just like elk breaking branches walking through the timber.
Most of my messed up opportunities are caused by me - not by squirrels.
I do all my bear steaks sous vide at 140 for an hour plus and it's been adequate to kill trichinosis. No problems. I trust it enough to feed it to my kids. If I was to do smoked bear sausage I'd be perfectly fine going to 140 internal temp.
I did a boat based hunt in PWS. I got by with the knee-high LaCrosse boots, and my friends in Alaska preferred the thigh-high rubber boots.
Good glass was important. I upgraded my binos after the trip, because the fellas with high end glass saw 2-3x the bears I did.
