Review: Pure One Outdoors Products X-Out and UV Elimination
By: Glendon Mullins, Rokslide Moderator
Whether you’re hunting whitetails in the Appalachian Mountains, elk in the Rocky Mountains, hogs in the Southern Swamps, or predators on the Great Plains, the one thing that all hunters have in common is the need for some form of scent control. No matter how hard we try, you cannot fool the nose of any animals, and we cannot control the wind direction on any given day. Therefore, most all hunters can benefit from some form of scent control whether it’s a field spray, scent free hair and body wash, or a scent free laundry detergent, or any combination of all of them used together. Pure One Outdoor Product’s X-Out Odor and UV Elimination Product line covers all the above and then some.
Pure One Products is headquartered in Richmond Virginia, and was founded in 2012 by Dr. Shawn Tyson. Dr. Tyson is a hunter who was dissatisfied with the effectiveness and price of the scent control hunting products currently on the market. With his medical back ground Dr. Tyson went to applying science to inventing innovative products to help hunters become more successful.
I have been using the X-Out Odor and UV Elimination Products going on two years now, along with your-run-of-the-mill, pick-up-at-the Walmart scent elimination products for longer than I can remember. With that background, I feel I have a pretty good grasp of which scent control products help hunters and which don’t.
The first and foremost difference I notice in the X-Out Products versus other products I have used is the “smell” while using them. I don’t mean a bad smell, or an off-the-wall smell, but there was a definite talcum or baby powder fragrance on me and my hunting clothes. While using the X-Out, I don’t experience any noticeable “smell”. It is, to me, truly odor free. I found this to be true for the hair and body wash as well as the field spray and laundry detergent that I have used.
In the two years that I have been using the X-Out Products, I have killed several whitetail deer, several wild hogs and several predators. All those kills at what one would consider close ranges. There are not many 250-yard shots in areas I hunt here in the East—most are less than 100 yards. I have let numerous smaller whitetail bucks pass by me at close range and had four different black bear come within twenty yards of me and one even to eight yards. Each time I remained undetected by them scent-wise. A couple of those bear were large, mature bears, weighing between 200 and 300 pounds, bears that are usually very aware compared to the youngsters.
As you probably noticed in the name of the product, it says “Scent UV Control…”. The UV refers to wild game’s Ultra-Violet vision. This is where the X-Out Products are truly different than any of your run-of-the-mill scent elimination product. To my knowledge, no other big name brand has the 2-in-1 component to control both odor and UV. X-Out Products has multiple applications from laundry detergent to sprays to activated carbon powder to truly fight the UV spectrum of animals’ vision. In the picture below you can see hunting clothes soaking in a tub of the carbon powder. You mix the carbon powder with warm water, soak for about 20 minutes, then air dry and seal your clothes in a scent free container. Then you’re ready to hunt.
According to X-Outhunt.com, a University of Georgia study found that deer are capable of seeing ultra-violet dyes and brighteners found within fabrics. Unfortunately these are the same dyes, brighteners and clothing fibers that Camouflage and jean manufacturers use to color their clothing. You can control UV camouflage glow by coating the camouflage fibers in turn controlling the UV glow that all wild game can see at low light conditions.
The best way that I can explain this is, without the X-Out UV eliminator products, you might look like a purple glowing rainbow Power Ranger walking through the woods. However if you want a more scientific explanation check out the X-Outhunt website and/or this article Busted: What You Didn’t Know About Deer Vision, where Dr. Tyson himself explains the study, the anatomy of a deer’s eye, and the science behind his products.
This part of Pure One Outdoors Products is a little harder for me to “review” as obviously I don’t have UV Vision, or see like a deer or elk sees. However Pure One has a lot of information and technical research posted on their website for you to review and being that they are a smaller based company, I have found Dr Shawn Tyson is very open to communication and discussion about his products. I am sure if you e-mailed him, or contacted him, he would provide plenty of technical information regarding the UV control of his products.
In closing, I would like to say, if you’re serious about scent control and serious about getting close to your game, you need to give these products a chance to work for you. I have had success in using them and I have no doubt they will help you be successful as well. Glowing less while putting on a spot and stalk on a bull elk, mule deer or pronghorn will definitely help even the odds. And really, who wants to look like a giant glowing purple rainbow Power Ranger anyway?
