It’s been said that points don’t buy you much when it comes to tagging big mule deer. I agree. Before 2010, bonus and preference points meant more than they do now. I’m not saying they’re still not important and I still apply for them yearly. However, with the flood of hunters jumping into the point pool of the various western states, the days of counting on points to deliver a big buck have gone the way of wood stocked guns and cotton underwear. Understanding reality is the best way to be satisfied with your hunts and I think this applied well to this new film: Mule Deer Muzzleloader Hunt. It was one of my favorite and even most satisfying hunts, but spoiler alert: no tags were punched in this film. However, I think if you’re still polishing on your big buck hunting skills, it’s worth the watch.
As I said in my book, it’s once again proof to me that you can spend a pile of points, work as hard as you can, and still go home with only more experience and great memories. If you’re a big buck hunter, that’s going to have to be enough more often than not. If you put forth your best effort, and don’t give up until you have to, you will become a better buck hunter, I promise.
And that’s exactly why I love big buck hunting!
Enjoy “Mule Deer Muzzleloader Hunt,” and be sure to share with your friends if you liked it. That helps keep me pushing out more blog posts, films, and Lord willin’, another book. Thanks!
