This is good advice to OP. Tarptent also makes some great floorless canopys. Or a Kifaru Supertarp. For early season CO, run and gun as light and simple as possible, it’d be a solid option. If it was me, I probably wouldn’t even use the bivy in that scenario, but something like the OR Helium...
Edit: I shouldn’t have said “any” on my first post, but rather “many” tarp bivy setups.
What tarp/bivy are you running? When I was using tarp/bivy hard, my all-in weight was always hovering around that 3lb mark, including enough stakes/guyline for all my pitches. I’m sure it can be done for...
Been back and forth several times. Then I got A Hilleberg Akto. Haven’t ever looked back. It’s as light or lighter than any bivy/tarp setup, and bombproof in weather. Just enough space without any extra weight. The bivy has been relegated to single overnighters on summer bonsai scouting trips or...
I’m not going to claim to know exactly what’s going on in that case in order to achieve the speed increase. All I know is with 165 TGKs in alpha brass, and Federal 205m SRP, I was able to get more than adequate speed out of an 18” barrel for 1800fps at just under 700 yards, something that would...
If you like the 7mm-08 check out the 7SAW2. Basically a 7-08 improved. That way you can chop the barrel, run a suppressor, and still have adequate velocity at 600+. Those 160-170 7mm bullets are impressive ballistically and on game, and the whole package is pleasant to shoot.

Just built a short barreled 7Saw2 on this exact premise. Short barrel so that once it’s suppressed, it’s still a manageable overall length. 6Creed would also fit the bill. Need something with good speed so that I’ve still got adequate velocity out of a 18” barrel at the longer ranges.

The trade off is shootability in a lightweight mountain style rifle. Most people develop some really bad habits if they spend a lot of time shooting heavy recoiling light weight rifles. I think the reason these guys hammer away at this conversation is because it helps people understand bullet...
This is exactly what I suspect as well. I do wonder if certain projectiles create higher odds of this happening. Hard blows to the chest on a human can stop your heart (ask how I know haha), which is clearly a CNS disruption that’s got nothing to do with tissue trauma. I wonder if the physics of...
It’s all about adequate wound channel to kill the target species. For this you need two things: penetration to the vitals, and enough tissue damage once the projectile is there. The line is when you no longer have one of these things.
The reason the .223 77TMK crowd is so vocal, is they have...
